Who is The Electric Viking?

Independent EV news, on-the-ground reporting, and unfiltered analysis from Melbourne, Australia.

Sam Evans is The Electric Viking — creator and host of one of the world's most influential independent channels covering electric vehicles, battery technology, and renewable energy. What began as a single voice in Melbourne has grown into a global newsroom for the clean-energy transition, watched by hundreds of thousands of EV owners, engineers, executives, and curious newcomers every week.

The mission

The Electric Viking exists to spread a single vision: a better world for us, for our children, and for those still to come. Electric vehicles, solar, wind, and battery storage aren't just cleaner alternatives — they're the foundation of an era of abundant, affordable energy. This channel covers the companies, engineers, and breakthroughs making that future arrive faster, and holds the laggards to account.

We publish six to eight videos a day, every day. No paywalls on the news. No filtered talking points. Just the metrics, the data, and the stories that actually move the industry.

How a marketer became The Electric Viking

Melbourne Australia

Sam grew up in Melbourne, Australia with a lifelong obsession for cars — fast ones, slow ones, every model and nameplate on the road. His professional background is in marketing: a year living in Taiwan setting up the international and Asian arm of Cycling Express, followed by years running his own digital-marketing agency back in Melbourne.

The pivot came when Tesla and the first wave of serious EVs hit the road. Sam realised internal-combustion vehicles weren't just polluting — they were boring. And as he dug into solar, wind, and battery storage, a bigger picture came into focus: the world was on the edge of a transition to clean, abundant energy, and most people had no idea how close it was.

He started the YouTube channel during the pandemic to share that message. It hasn't slowed down since.

On the ground in China — and everywhere else

The EV revolution is happening fastest in China, so that's where Sam goes. He's travelled extensively across the country — touring manufacturing facilities, test-driving cars that haven't reached Western markets.

That same on-the-ground reporting takes him further afield. He has tested cars across the United States, Italy, Thailand, ridden electric tuk-tuks in Bangladesh, and filmed from cities and showrooms most automotive media never visit. The result is a perspective you won't find in press releases: the global EV transition as it actually looks, not as marketing departments describe it.

What's in the garage

Sam currently owns and drives a Zeekr 7X All-Wheel Drive and an Xpeng G6 Long Range — two of the cars he believes best represent where the industry is heading. While the channel isn't primarily a review platform, Sam publishes a long-form test drive every couple of weeks and an annual "Top 5 EVs of the Year" rundown for both the Australian and US markets.

Four years advising the clean-tech sector

Beyond the channel, Sam is a sought-after consultant for companies and investors navigating renewable-energy infrastructure, EV market trends, and next-generation battery technology. For the past four years he has provided strategic guidance to leaders across the clean-tech sector — translating fast-moving technical shifts into actionable market intelligence.

He has also joined the OctoEnergy speaker lineup, sharing insights on the real-world trajectory of battery technology and the global EV transition with industry audiences.

Beyond the channel

When Sam isn't analysing energy density or tracking global supply chains, he's raising his two boys, Jack and Cal, in Melbourne. Both are keen BMX racers — most days end at a local track or in the backyard jumping over homemade ramps. Sam is also a part-time surfer and a lifelong cyclist.

Before the channel, he and his wife spent twelve months riding bicycles around the world — 18,000 kilometres across 24 countries, mostly camping in a tent, blogging from the road every day. That trip took them through Southeast Asia, Europe, the UK, Ireland, and down the entire US west coast from Portland to the Mexican border. It's part of why this channel takes a global view: Sam has seen, first-hand, how energy and transport actually work in two dozen different countries.

Standing on the shoulders of visionaries

The Electric Viking is deeply influenced by the work of thinkers like Tony Seba and Peter Diamandis — analysts and futurists who saw the clean-energy disruption coming long before it reached mainstream coverage. Their thesis, broadly, is that solar, wind, batteries, and electric vehicles are not incremental upgrades but a full S-curve replacement of fossil-fuel infrastructure. Every story we publish is, in some way, a data point in that larger thesis.
