For the first time, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have become the most popular powertrain in Germany, according to new sales data for June. This milestone marks a significant shift in the birthplace of the automobile, as BEVs narrowly surpassed hybrids and other powertrains in monthly sales.
BEV Sales Reach New Heights in June
According to ADAC, Germany’s largest auto club, BEVs sold 84,057 units in June, making them the top-selling powertrain for the month. This figure edged out hybrids, which recorded 83,315 sales.
Gasoline cars followed with 60,796 units sold, while diesel vehicles accounted for 33,862 sales. Plug-in hybrids reached 32,212 units.

Market Share and Emissions Impact
BEVs achieved a 28.4% market share in June, the highest among all powertrain types. Plug-in hybrids contributed an additional 10.9%, bringing the combined plug-in market share to 39.3%.
The increase in BEV sales led to a 13.6% year-over-year reduction in the average CO2 emissions of new cars sold in Germany.
Long-Term Trends and Installed Base
Despite the record month for BEVs, the majority of vehicles on German roads are still powered by fossil fuels. BEVs and plug-in hybrids together make up around 6% of the total vehicle fleet.
An incentive for EVs was cancelled in 2023, which previously led to a dip in sales, but the market has since rebounded.
Why this matters
Germany’s milestone highlights the growing role of electric vehicles in one of the world’s most influential automotive markets. The shift to BEVs as the leading powertrain type for the first time reflects changing consumer preferences and the impact of policy and market developments.

The reduction in average CO2 emissions from new cars demonstrates the environmental benefits of increased BEV adoption, even as the transition to a fully electric fleet will take time.
What this means for buyers
Buyers in Germany are seeing a wider range of electric vehicle options, with BEVs now leading monthly sales. While the majority of vehicles on the road remain fossil-fueled, the trend suggests that electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly mainstream choice.
