BMW Opens Pre-Sales for China-Exclusive Long-Wheelbase iX3 at Chengdu Auto Show

BMW has launched pre-sales for the all-new long-wheelbase iX3, a model designed specifically for the Chinese market. Announced at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, the electric SUV is available in three variants with pre-sale prices ranging from $40,008 (~AUD 56,301) to $50,385 (~AUD 70,903). BMW confirmed that these pre-sale prices will remain unchanged at launch.

China-Specific Design and Features

The long-wheelbase iX3 is built on BMW’s Neue Klasse electric platform and features a wheelbase of 3,005 mm (~118 inches). Its overall dimensions are 4,885 mm (~192 inches) in length, 1,895 mm (~75 inches) in width, and 1,635 mm (~64 inches) in height.

The exterior adopts the Neue Klasse design language, highlighted by a 3D illuminated grille and ‘Digital Angel’ light clusters with 322 LED beads. Semi-hidden door handles offer both electric and physical opening options. Buyers can choose from nine exterior colours and four interior schemes, available in dual-tone or monochromatic finishes.

Interior Technology and Connectivity

Inside, the iX3 is centred around the BMW Panoramic iDrive system. The cabin features a ‘Panoramic Vision Bridge’ and a 3D head-up display that projects a 40-inch 4K panoramic image onto the windshield using ultra-short-throw projection. The 17.9-inch touchscreen is angled 17.5 degrees toward the driver for improved ergonomics.

Connectivity options include compatibility with Huawei HiCar and Apple CarPlay. The infotainment system integrates Alibaba’s AI large language model and DeepSeek’s reasoning capabilities. For autonomous driving, BMW partnered with Momenta to develop an AI driving system tailored for complex urban and highway scenarios in China.

Performance and Charging

The iX3 is powered by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology and features an 800V high-voltage architecture. It uses 108 kWh 4695 large cylindrical batteries with Cell to Pack (CTP) technology, resulting in a 20% increase in energy density and a 30% increase in range compared to the previous generation.

The iX3 50L model is equipped with an asynchronous front motor and an excited synchronous rear motor, delivering a combined output of 351 kW (477 hp). The vehicle offers a range of up to 900 km (~560 miles) on the CLTC cycle, with official energy consumption as low as 15.1 kWh/100 km. Charging is rapid, with a 10-minute session providing 400 km (~250 miles) of range, and a 10% to 80% fast charge taking just 21 minutes.

Utility and Storage

The iX3 provides practical storage solutions, including a 58L front trunk and a rear luggage compartment offering 540L of space, which can be expanded to 1,600L by folding the rear seats.

Why this matters

BMW’s introduction of a long-wheelbase, China-exclusive iX3 demonstrates the brand’s focus on meeting local market preferences with advanced electric technology and tailored features. The model’s combination of extended range, rapid charging, and high-end connectivity aims to appeal to Chinese consumers seeking premium electric SUVs.

What this means for buyers

Buyers in China interested in a premium electric SUV now have a new option with the long-wheelbase iX3, offering advanced technology, spacious design, and fast charging. With pre-sale prices confirmed to match the final launch prices, early reservation holders can expect price stability as the model reaches dealerships.
