BMW Unveils Interior of New i3 Long Wheelbase for China at Chengdu Auto Show

BMW has officially revealed the interior of its new i3 Long Wheelbase at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, targeting the Chinese market. Built on the Neue Klasse platform and featuring the latest eDrive technology, this model aims to strengthen BMW’s position in China, its largest global market. The new i3 Long Wheelbase is set to enter domestic production in January 2027.

A Closer Look at the Exterior

The new i3 Long Wheelbase stands out with a wheelbase exceeding 3 meters (~118 inches), providing enhanced rear passenger space. The front design features BMW’s signature kidney grille combined with quad headlights, while radar and camera sensors for intelligent driving assistance are seamlessly integrated behind the light units.

Distinctive elements for the Chinese market include semi-hidden door handles and an illuminated ‘M’ emblem on the C-pillar. The vehicle is offered in an ‘Isle of Man Green’ paint finish. At the rear, a horizontal ‘L-shaped’ light strip extends from the central logo, echoing the ‘7-shaped’ daytime running lights at the front. Storage is practical, with a 31L front trunk and a 420L rear trunk.

Interior and Technology Highlights

Inside, the i3 Long Wheelbase features a white and grey contrast colour scheme. The Panoramic iDrive+ Intelligent Cockpit is the centerpiece, offering a 17.9-inch borderless central control screen, a 43.3-inch horizon panoramic display, and a 3D Head-Up Display (HUD). A dedicated multi-function steering wheel, three-zone automatic climate control, electrically adjustable multi-function seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system add to the premium feel.

Performance and Range

Built on an 800V high-voltage platform and equipped with BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system, the new i3 Long Wheelbase accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The launch edition is powered by a 108 kWh battery, delivering a range of 906 km (~563 miles) on a single charge.

Competitor Comparison

The i3 Long Wheelbase enters a competitive segment in China, where rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 Long Range and NIO ET5 also offer extended wheelbase variants and advanced technology. BMW’s focus on interior luxury and rear-seat comfort is tailored to local preferences, aiming to differentiate itself from these established competitors.

Historical Context

In 2024, BMW sold 714,530 vehicles in China, representing a 14% year-on-year decline. Despite this drop, China remained BMW’s largest market, accounting for about 25% of global sales across the BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands. The introduction of the new i3 Long Wheelbase is part of BMW’s strategy to regain momentum in the region.

Why this matters

The debut of the i3 Long Wheelbase highlights BMW’s commitment to the Chinese market, where consumer demand for spacious, tech-forward electric vehicles continues to grow. By offering a model specifically tailored to local tastes and equipped with the latest technology, BMW aims to strengthen its presence amid increasing competition from both domestic and international brands.

What this means for buyers

Buyers in China seeking a premium electric sedan with advanced technology and a focus on rear-seat comfort will find the i3 Long Wheelbase a compelling option. With production set to begin in January 2027, potential customers should monitor for pricing announcements and compare features with other long wheelbase EVs available in the market.
