BYD Denza D9 Adds Dark Gold Color Option in China, Priced at $4,421 (~AUD 6,374)

BYD’s Denza D9 minivan has introduced a new Dark Gold color option for the Chinese market, expanding its customization choices. The new color package is available for an additional $4,421 (~AUD 6,374), bringing a distinctive look to the second-generation MPV.

Denza D9 Dark Gold: New Look and Features

The second-generation Denza D9 was launched in China on May 1, with deliveries starting on May 7. On July 7, BYD revealed the new Dark Gold color scheme, which features a blackened body accented by glossy golden trim, a shield-shaped grille, and a genuine gold-plated emblem on the front.

Other design highlights include black multi-spoke rims with golden caps, a continuous taillight unit, a gold stripe running across the body, a roof spoiler, and a golden accent in the rear bumper. Most badges are finished in black, except for the Flash Charging badge, which remains silver to emphasize BYD’s latest charging technology.

Pricing and Availability

The Dark Gold color option is priced at $4,421 (~AUD 6,374). With this addition, the top-trim Denza D9 reaches a price of $73,657 (~AUD 106,188). The standard price range for the second-generation Denza D9 is between $53,025 (~AUD 76,443) and $69,236 (~AUD 99,814).

According to China EV DataTracker, Denza delivered 6,145 units of the D9 MPV to domestic customers.

Powertrain and Performance Options

The Denza D9 is offered with both BEV and PHEV powertrain options. The all-electric model comes in FWD with 340 kW (456 hp) and AWD with a combined peak power of 410 kW (550 hp). Both versions use a 115 kWh LFP battery that can be charged from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes, offering a range between 750 and 800 km (~466 to ~497 miles) under CLTC conditions.

The plug-in hybrid variant features a 1.5-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine producing 115 kW (154 hp). The entry-level PHEV has a single e-motor rated at 200 kW (268 hp), while the AWD trim adds a rear e-motor with 45 kW (60 hp). This version is equipped with a 66.5 kWh battery, supporting up to 400 km (~249 miles) in EV mode and also benefits from flash charging technology.

Why this matters

The introduction of the Dark Gold color option provides buyers with more ways to personalize their Denza D9, reflecting growing demand for premium and distinctive finishes in the Chinese MPV segment. The Denza D9’s combination of advanced battery technology, fast charging, and a choice of electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains highlights BYD’s ongoing innovation in the market.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in the Denza D9 now have an additional premium color option to consider, though it comes at a notable price increase. Those prioritizing fast charging and long range will find both the BEV and PHEV variants competitive, with the new color scheme adding further exclusivity to the top-trim models.
