BYD Donates 10 Million Yuan to Support Guangxi Disaster Relief Efforts

BYD has announced a major donation to aid recovery efforts in Guangxi following the devastation caused by Typhoon Maysak. The move comes as Chinese EV makers, including Nio, step up to support communities affected by record-breaking rainfall and flooding.

BYD’s Relief Contribution

BYD (HKEX: 1211) revealed on Wednesday that its charity foundation will donate $1.5M (~AUD 2.1M) to disaster-hit Guangxi. According to the company, the funds will be allocated to emergency rescue operations, living assistance for affected residents, support for rescue teams, and post-disaster reconstruction in the region.

The automaker stated that it will continue to monitor the progress of rescue efforts and remain committed to supporting the people of Guangxi through this challenging period.

Nio’s Parallel Relief Efforts

Nio announced a day earlier that it, together with the Nio User Foundation, has partnered with the China Charity Federation and on-site rescue organizations to provide aid in Guangxi. Nio’s resources are being used for emergency living supplies, replenishing rescue equipment, repairing damaged infrastructure, and supporting post-disaster resettlement and reconstruction.

Impact of Typhoon Maysak in Guangxi

Typhoon Maysak has brought historically rare and persistent heavy rainfall to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. As of July 7, 375,000 people had been affected, with 6 reported dead and 11 missing, according to Xinhua News Agency. Authorities have urgently relocated 130,000 people to safer areas.

The heavy rainfall has impacted about 77% of Guangxi’s townships, with cumulative rainfall exceeding 600 millimeters (~23.6 inches) in cities such as Nanning, Guigang, Qinzhou, and Fangchenggang. Several rainfall stations have broken historical records for this period. As of 8 pm on July 7, nine reservoirs in Nanning and Guigang had experienced overtopping and dam seepage.

China has deployed 8,342 rescue personnel, more than 1,700 vehicles, and over 5,700 boats and lifeboats to the region. Additionally, 12,900 hectares (~31,900 acres) of crops have been damaged, with further economic losses still being calculated.

Competitor Comparison

Both BYD and Nio have taken visible roles in supporting disaster relief in Guangxi, highlighting a trend among leading Chinese EV makers to engage in community support during crises. While BYD’s donation focuses on a direct financial contribution, Nio’s approach involves collaboration with charitable organizations and on-the-ground rescue teams.

Historical Context

This is not the first time Chinese automakers have responded to natural disasters with significant aid. The scale of Typhoon Maysak’s impact, with rainfall breaking historical records and affecting hundreds of thousands, has prompted a coordinated response from both government and private sectors.

Why this matters

The involvement of major EV makers like BYD and Nio in disaster relief demonstrates the growing social responsibility role of automotive companies in China. Their contributions provide critical support for emergency response and recovery, helping affected communities rebuild after severe weather events.

What this means for buyers

For consumers, these actions may reinforce confidence in brands that actively support their communities during times of crisis. Buyers considering vehicles from BYD or Nio can see these companies’ commitment to social responsibility, which may influence purchasing decisions, especially in regions vulnerable to natural disasters.
