BYD Fang Cheng Bao Opens Pre-Orders for Formula S Sedan Lineup, Starting at $34,039 (~AUD 47,993)

BYD’s sub-brand Fang Cheng Bao has launched pre-orders for its first sedan lineup, the Formula S and Formula S GT, ahead of their official debut at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show. The new models are positioned below previous industry price expectations and mark a significant expansion for the brand, which has previously focused on SUVs and off-road vehicles.

Fang Cheng Bao’s First Sedans Make Their Debut

Fang Cheng Bao, a sub-brand of BYD, has opened pre-orders in China for the Formula S and Formula S GT, with prices ranging from $34,039 (~AUD 47,993) to $41,439 (~AUD 58,426). These models will be officially unveiled at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, which opens on August 21.

This marks Fang Cheng Bao’s first entry into the sedan segment, following the Bao series focused on rugged off-road vehicles and the Tai series aimed at urban driving. The brand describes the new lineup as an “all-scenario, multi-form personalized sedan.”

Model Details and Specifications

The Formula S series includes the Formula S sedan and the Formula S GT shooting brake. While a third model, the Formula SL coupe, was previously shown, the current reservation program covers only the first two.

The Formula S measures 5,060 mm (~199 inches) in length, 1,967 mm (~77 inches) in width, and 1,483 mm (~58 inches) in height. The Formula S GT is 5,025 mm (~198 inches) long, or 5,095 mm (~201 inches) with an optional tow hitch. Both models share a 2,960 mm (~117 inches) wheelbase and are positioned in the mid-to-large sedan segment.

Customers can choose between rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. Rear-wheel-drive variants offer peak motor outputs of either 245 kW or 300 kW, while all-wheel-drive models use a 190-kW front motor and a 300-kW rear motor. Battery options include 76.744 kWh and 92.093 kWh packs, supporting CLTC ranges from 730 km (~454 miles) to 900 km (~559 miles). The lineup is expected to feature BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and flash charging technology.

Four exterior colors—silver, green, yellow, and red—have been announced, with additional options planned for the future.

Sales Growth and Upcoming Launches

Fang Cheng Bao’s sales have been rising rapidly, with 41,213 vehicles delivered in July, representing a 190.6% increase year-on-year. In the first seven months of 2026, the brand delivered 200,687 vehicles.

On August 5, Fang Cheng Bao reported that its cumulative sales had surpassed 500,000 units in less than three years, with an average transaction price above $33,003 (~AUD 46,532). The Tai 9, a 6-seat plug-in hybrid SUV and the brand’s largest model, will also make its global debut at the Chengdu Auto Show.

Why this matters

The launch of the Formula S series marks Fang Cheng Bao’s expansion beyond SUVs and off-road vehicles into the competitive sedan market. With pricing below earlier industry expectations and a focus on personalization and advanced battery technology, the new models could attract a broader customer base.

Rapid sales growth and the introduction of new models highlight Fang Cheng Bao’s increasing presence in China’s new energy vehicle market, reinforcing BYD’s position as a leading automaker.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in a mid-to-large electric sedan now have new options from Fang Cheng Bao, with competitive pricing and a choice of powertrains and battery sizes. Those considering a purchase may want to watch for the full specifications, which will be revealed after the Chengdu Auto Show opens.

With pre-orders now open and deliveries expected to follow the official debut, early adopters can secure their place in line for Fang Cheng Bao’s first sedan offerings.
