BYD has marked a significant production milestone, rolling out its 17 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) just 82 days after reaching the 16 million mark. The milestone vehicle is the newly launched Seal 08, a flagship sedan from BYD’s Ocean lineup.
Seal 08 Takes Center Stage
The 17 millionth NEV to leave BYD’s production line is the Seal 08, which officially launched on July 2. This model is available in six variants, offering both plug-in hybrid and pure electric options, and starts at $28,948 (~AUD 41,672).
The Seal 08 is the first BYD model to feature flash charging technology as standard across its entire lineup, including both PHEV and BEV versions. It is equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery, and the BEV variant is built on an 800-volt high-voltage platform.

Performance and Technology Highlights
The BEV version of the Seal 08 offers a CLTC pure electric range of up to 905 km (~562 miles), with a five-minute charge capable of replenishing 400 km (~249 miles) of range. All variants come equipped with the LiDAR version of the God’s Eye B smart driving assistance system, which supports dual fallback for urban navigation assistance and intelligent parking.
Additional safety features include AEB automatic emergency braking. BYD is also providing 12 months of free flash charging for new Seal 08 owners.
BYD’s Accelerating Production Pace
BYD’s latest milestone comes less than three months after its 16 millionth NEV, the second-generation Denza D9 MPV, rolled off the line on April 17, 2026. The interval between milestones has shortened, with just 82 days between the 16 and 17 million marks, compared to 120 days between the 15 and 16 million milestones.
BYD produced its first NEV in December 2008 and reached its 1 millionth in May 2021. The 10 millionth milestone was achieved on November 18, 2024, and the company took just 13 months to go from 10 to 15 million NEVs.
Recent Sales Performance
In June, BYD sold 403,472 NEVs at wholesale, a 5.46% increase year-on-year. Overseas sales reached a record 175,349 units, up 94.73% year-on-year, while domestic sales in June fell 22.02% year-on-year.
For the first half of this year, BYD’s cumulative NEV sales totaled 1,808,511 units, down 15.72% compared to the same period last year. The Seal series posted cumulative sales of 170,142 units in the first half of the year, representing a 16.02% decline year-on-year.

Why this matters
BYD’s achievement of producing 17 million NEVs highlights the company’s rapid growth and significant role in the global new energy vehicle market. The launch of the Seal 08 as the milestone vehicle underscores BYD’s ongoing commitment to innovation, particularly in battery technology and fast charging.
The acceleration in production milestones, despite recent sales pressures, signals BYD’s ability to scale manufacturing and introduce new models that may appeal to both domestic and international buyers.
What this means for buyers
Buyers considering the Seal 08 will benefit from advanced battery technology, fast charging capabilities, and a comprehensive smart driving assistance system. The inclusion of 12 months of free flash charging adds further value for early adopters.
With BYD continuing to expand its NEV lineup and production capacity, prospective customers can expect ongoing improvements in technology and availability.
