BYD Sealion 08 SUV Debuts With 115 kWh Battery and 900 km Range

BYD has unveiled the Sealion 08, a large electric SUV featuring a massive 115 kWh LFP battery pack and an impressive 900 km (~560 miles) CLTC range. The new model highlights BYD’s ongoing push in the high-end EV SUV segment, with multiple battery and powertrain options aimed at a broad range of buyers.

Sealion 08: Battery and Powertrain Options

The BYD Sealion 08 offers two main battery choices. The entry-level variant is equipped with a 92.093 kWh LFP Blade Battery, developed by BYD, which powers a single rear motor delivering 320 kW (429 hp). This battery weighs 633 kg (~1,396 lbs) and accounts for about 26% of the vehicle’s 2,420 kg (~5,335 lbs) curb weight. Notably, this second-generation Blade Battery supports flash charging, reportedly charging from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes.

The standout option is the 115.072 kWh LFP battery pack, which weighs 810.5 kg (~1,788 lbs) and provides a CLTC range of 900 km (~560 miles). In the Long-Range RWD trim, this battery powers a 370 kW (496 hp) motor and makes up 31.2% of the car’s 2,595 kg (~5,722 lbs) curb weight. The top-trim Sealion 08 features a dual-motor AWD setup with a combined output of 585 kW (784 hp), an 800 km (~497 miles) CLTC range, and a curb weight of 2,710 kg (~5,974 lbs). This version accelerates to 100 km/h in the 5-second range.

Plug-in Hybrid and Chassis Features

In addition to its all-electric variants, the Sealion 08 is available with a DM-i plug-in hybrid system. This setup combines a 1.5-liter engine (115 kW/154 hp) with a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor, offering up to 400 km (~249 miles) of CLTC range. A DM-p version with two electric motors and a combined output of 400 kW (536 hp) is also planned.

The Sealion 08 measures 5,115 mm (~201 inches) long, 1,999 mm (~79 inches) wide, and 1,800 mm (~71 inches) high, with a 3,030 mm (~119 inches) wheelbase. Buyers can choose between five-seat and six-seat layouts. Key features include rear-wheel steering, the DiSus-A chassis with dual-chamber air suspension, and the DiPilot 5.0 assisted driving system, which supports Navigate On Autopilot (NOA) for both urban and highway driving.

Competitor Comparison

The BYD Sealion 08 enters a competitive segment alongside the Zeekr 9X, IM LS9, and Kia EV9. The Zeekr 9X and IM LS9 are both positioned as premium Chinese large SUVs, offering luxury features and advanced technology. The Kia EV9, an international contender, is known for its refinement and tech-forward approach. The Sealion 08 distinguishes itself with its large LFP battery options, high power outputs, and advanced chassis and driver assistance systems.

Historical Context and Market Performance

BYD continues to expand its presence in the global EV market, capturing approximately 18% of global EV sales in 2025. In May 2026, BYD delivered 164,971 vehicles domestically, a 37.9% year-over-year decrease. However, global sales for the month reached 376,990 units, with international growth offsetting domestic declines.

The broader context shows strong momentum for new energy vehicles in China, with 4.27 million NEVs sold in 2024, representing a 41.26% year-over-year increase.

Why this matters

The Sealion 08’s debut underscores BYD’s commitment to pushing battery technology and range in the large SUV segment. With its massive LFP battery packs and advanced features, the model targets both domestic and international buyers seeking long-range, high-performance electric SUVs.

BYD’s continued sales growth and global expansion highlight the brand’s increasing influence in the EV market, even as domestic sales fluctuate. The Sealion 08 is positioned to strengthen BYD’s presence in the premium SUV category and appeal to buyers looking for advanced technology and long-distance capability.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering a large electric SUV now have a new high-range option in the Sealion 08, with both all-electric and plug-in hybrid variants. Those prioritizing range and advanced features may find the Sealion 08 especially compelling compared to rivals like the Zeekr 9X, IM LS9, and Kia EV9.

With BYD’s ongoing global expansion, prospective buyers outside China should watch for regional availability announcements. The model’s advanced battery and chassis technology may set new benchmarks for the segment.
