BYD has reached a major milestone in Thailand, surpassing 130,000 cumulative deliveries as its Rayong plant marks its second anniversary. The company also launched the Sealion 5 DM-i hybrid SUV, further expanding its plug-in hybrid lineup in Southeast Asia.
BYD Expands Localized Production in Thailand
BYD’s Thailand plant, located at WHA Industrial Estate in Rayong province, is the automaker’s first overseas passenger vehicle production base. Since beginning operations in July 2024, the plant has achieved a designed annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles.
The facility now produces several models locally, including the BYD Dolphin, BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal 5 DM-i, BYD Sealion 5 DM-i, and BYD Sealion 6 DM-i. All of these vehicles have received Made in Thailand (MiT) certification from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), highlighting the company’s commitment to local manufacturing.

Sealion 5 DM-i Launch and Milestone Delivery
At a recent event in Bangkok, BYD delivered its 130,000th new energy vehicle (NEV) in Thailand, with the milestone car being a BYD Sealion 5 DM-i. This model features BYD’s DM-i super hybrid technology, emphasizing low fuel consumption, long range, and strong performance.
The launch of the Sealion 5 DM-i marks the latest step in BYD’s expansion of its plug-in hybrid offerings in the Thai market.
Local Impact and Workforce Development
Over the past two years, the Rayong plant has created more than 5,000 jobs, with Thai employees making up about 93% of the workforce. The local parts procurement ratio has reached 50 percent, supporting the growth of Thailand’s automotive supply chain.
Ke Yubin, general manager of BYD’s Thailand unit, stated that the company will continue to improve its manufacturing system and supply chain coordination while cultivating local talent.
Export Role and Regional Growth
The Thailand plant has also begun exporting vehicles, with more than 900 BYD Dolphin EVs shipped to Europe in August 2025. Destinations included the UK, Germany, and Belgium.
BYD entered the Thai market in 2022, initially selling vehicles through imports. By October 2025, Thailand became BYD’s first Asia-Pacific market to exceed 100,000 deliveries.
Competitor Comparison
BYD faces competition in Thailand from other major automakers offering plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. Key rivals include MG, which has a strong presence in the Thai EV market, as well as Japanese brands like Toyota and Honda that continue to dominate with hybrid models. BYD’s rapid growth and local production give it a unique advantage in terms of pricing and availability.
Why this matters
BYD’s achievement of 130,000 deliveries and the expansion of its local production highlight the company’s growing influence in Southeast Asia’s automotive market. With an 8% market share in Thailand and a year-on-year sales increase of 64.1% in 2023, BYD is helping to drive the adoption of new energy vehicles in the region.
The localization of manufacturing and supply chain operations not only supports the Thai economy but also positions Thailand as a potential hub for NEV production and export within ASEAN.

What this means for buyers
For Thai consumers, BYD’s local production means better availability of models like the Dolphin, Atto 3, and Sealion 5 DM-i, as well as potential cost advantages. Buyers can expect a growing range of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles with local support and certification.
Those considering a new energy vehicle in Thailand should compare BYD’s offerings with established competitors, keeping in mind the company’s rapid expansion and increasing local content.
