BYD to Unveil Third-Generation Tang SUV at 2026 Chengdu Auto Show

BYD is set to debut its third-generation Tang SUV at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show on August 21. The new model, officially named the third-generation Tang, brings significant updates to the Dynasty lineup, including advanced battery technology and rapid charging capabilities. This launch marks a key moment in BYD’s ongoing revamp of its flagship SUV range.

Third-Generation Tang: Key Features and Specifications

The third-generation Tang is a five-seat, mid-to-large SUV that will join BYD’s Dynasty lineup as a new flagship model. It measures 5,045 mm (~199 inches) in length, 1,980 mm (~78 inches) in width, and 1,760 mm (~69 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm (~116 inches).

This new Tang is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor delivering a peak output of 300 kW (402 hp). Buyers can choose between two battery pack options: 88.682 kWh and 105.792 kWh. Depending on the variant, the SUV offers CLTC electric ranges of 730 km (~454 miles), 830 km (~516 miles), and 850 km (~528 miles).

Advanced Technology and Charging

BYD has equipped the third-generation Tang with its second-generation Blade Battery and flash charging technology. According to the company, the battery can be charged from 10% to 70% in about 5 minutes at normal temperatures.

The SUV also comes standard with the God’s Eye B advanced driver-assistance system. Additional features include BYD’s DiSus-A intelligent body control system, which incorporates dual-chamber air suspension and an intelligent road-preview function.

Flagship Lineup and Auto Show Debut

The third-generation Tang will form a dual-flagship lineup alongside the full-size Da Tang (9-series Tang), which was launched in June. The Da Tang EV, BYD’s first D-segment flagship SUV, debuted with a starting price of $35,524 (~AUD 49,975) and a CLTC range of up to 950 km (~590 miles). Pre-sale orders for the Da Tang EV surpassed 150,000 units by launch.

The Chengdu Auto Show will also see the public debut of the Da Han, the Dynasty lineup’s first D-segment flagship sedan, offering an all-electric range of up to 1,008 km (~626 miles).

Chengdu Auto Show and Market Context

The twenty-ninth Chengdu International Motor Show runs from August 21 to August 30, 2026. As China’s first Class A Auto Show in the second half of the year, it will feature nearly 120 brands and about 1,600 vehicles. BYD will have a dedicated group pavilion in Hall 9.

Sales of the Tang lineup have declined in recent months, with 9,282 units sold in June (down 48.55% year-on-year) and first-half sales dropping 49.87% to 41,403 units. BYD has accelerated the refresh of its flagship models in response.

Why this matters

The debut of the third-generation Tang highlights BYD’s commitment to updating its flagship SUV lineup with advanced technology and improved performance. The introduction of rapid charging and enhanced driver-assistance features positions the Tang as a strong contender in the competitive Chinese SUV market.

With declining sales in the Tang family, this launch is a strategic move by BYD to regain momentum and attract new buyers as the market evolves.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in a technologically advanced, long-range electric SUV will find the third-generation Tang an appealing option, especially with its rapid charging and comprehensive safety features. Those considering a purchase may want to watch for further announcements on pricing and availability following the Chengdu Auto Show.
