BYD’s Denza Z Supercar Outpaces Porsche 911 Turbo S on Speed and Price

BYD’s Denza Z, described by the company as ‘the world’s first intelligent supercar,’ is making headlines for its remarkable performance and competitive pricing. With a tri-motor setup delivering over 1,500 horsepower, the Denza Z accelerates faster than the Porsche 911 Turbo S and comes in at a lower price point. Orders for the Denza Z opened at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month, with BYD reporting that ‘global pre-orders are booming.’

Denza Z: Performance and Technology

The Denza Z is available in three variants: Coupe, Spider, and Racing, all built on BYD’s e3 platform. This platform is the first from BYD to feature a fully self-developed steer-by-wire system, enhancing control and handling. The Denza Z is equipped with three electric motors, delivering a combined 1,820 horsepower (1,604 PS) and 914 lb-ft (1,240 Nm) of torque.

The flagship Racing variant stands out with a 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) acceleration time of just 1.96 seconds when fitted with optional semi-slick tires, and a top speed of 217 mph (250 km/h). All models include rear-wheel steering and BYD’s Disus-M magnetorheological intelligent suspension system, which enables the car to ‘dance,’ hop over obstacles, and absorb bumps.

Battery, Range, and Charging

Each Denza Z model is powered by a 76 kWh BYD Blade Battery 2.0, utilizing an 800V architecture and BYD’s Flash Charging system. The battery can be charged from 10% to 70% in as little as five minutes, and from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes.

The Coupe variant offers a WLTP range of 410 km (~254 miles), the Spider up to 400 km (~248 miles), and the Racing up to 380 km (~236 miles).

Design and Dimensions

The Denza Z measures 4,780 mm (~188 inches) in length, 1,990 mm (~78 inches) in width, and 1,350 mm (~53 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,780 mm (~109 inches). These dimensions make it slightly larger than a Porsche 911 and closer in size to the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe.

Premium features include rear-wheel steering for easier parking and distinctive exterior and interior design elements.

Pricing and Market Position

BYD opened orders for the Denza Z at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month, with UK pricing starting at £142,900. The Racing variant is priced from £172,900. In China, the Coupe Hardtop starts at $100,761 (~AUD 142,241), the Spider at $115,579 (~AUD 163,158), and the Racing at $174,850 (~AUD 246,829).

For comparison, the Porsche 911 Turbo S starts at £199,100 and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in as little as 2.5 seconds—slower and more expensive than the Denza Z Racing.

Global Expansion and Demand

Denza, a brand under BYD, is preparing to enter the European market, targeting established premium automakers such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW.

Following the launch, BYD stated that ‘global pre-orders are booming,’ with over 1,000 orders placed in just five days.

Why this matters

The Denza Z’s combination of high performance, rapid charging, and competitive pricing positions it as a serious contender in the global supercar segment. Its ability to outperform established models like the Porsche 911 Turbo S on both speed and price highlights the growing influence of Chinese EV manufacturers in the premium market.

With BYD’s rapid technological advancements and aggressive pricing, the Denza Z could accelerate the shift toward electric supercars and intensify competition among luxury automakers.

What this means for buyers

Buyers seeking supercar performance with advanced electric technology now have a compelling alternative to traditional brands. The Denza Z offers faster acceleration and lower pricing than its main rivals, making it an attractive option for those considering a high-performance EV.

Potential buyers should monitor regional availability as Denza expands into new markets, and compare the Denza Z’s features and pricing with established competitors before making a decision.
