CATL Launches Tectrans II 8C Battery: Ultra-Fast Charging for Light Commercial EVs

CATL has unveiled its Tectrans II (Tianxing II) battery, bringing ultra-fast charging to light commercial vehicles. With the ability to charge from 20% to 80% in under 7 minutes, this new battery aims to make electric logistics as convenient as traditional refueling. The launch is supported by a nationwide rollout of integrated charging and battery swap stations across China.

Ultra-Fast Charging Capabilities

The Tectrans II battery introduces an 8C peak charging rate to the light commercial vehicle segment. This allows vehicles to charge from 20% to 80% State of Charge (SOC) in just 6 minutes and 48 seconds, with a full charge completed in 8 minutes and 56 seconds. CATL designed this battery to address the high-utilization needs of logistics fleets, aiming to minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency.

This development follows CATL’s April launch of the third-generation Shenxing battery for passenger vehicles, which can charge from 10% to 80% in 3 minutes and 44 seconds. While the Shenxing III focuses on passenger car performance, the Tectrans II is tailored for the durability and heavy-duty cycles required in commercial logistics.

Durability and Cold-Weather Performance

CATL has engineered the Tectrans II battery for long-term reliability, offering a warranty of up to 10 years or 1,000,000 km (~620,000 miles). The company reduced the cell internal resistance to 50% of the industry average, which lowers heat generation during rapid charging. Atomic-level interface reconstruction on graphite particles further minimizes lithium loss, supporting battery longevity.

The battery is also designed to perform in extreme cold. At temperatures as low as -20°C, charging time increases by only 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This builds on CATL’s self-heating pulse technology, first seen in the Shenxing III, which enables fast charging in cold environments without external heating infrastructure.

Charging Infrastructure Expansion

To support the Tectrans II, CATL is deploying a new network of ‘integrated ultra-charging and battery swap’ stations. These stations are compatible with both passenger and commercial vehicles and feature customized ultra-fast charging piles with cable lengths tailored for micro-vans and light trucks.

CATL plans to install 4,000 of these integrated stations across nearly 190 cities in China in 2026, targeting a wide range of logistics scenarios including urban distribution, intercity transport, and cold-chain delivery.

Competitor Comparison

CATL’s Tectrans II enters a competitive landscape where rapid charging and battery durability are increasingly important. While CATL’s Shenxing III battery set a benchmark for passenger vehicles, the Tectrans II is among the first to bring 8C charging rates to the commercial sector. Other battery manufacturers have focused on high energy density or cold-weather performance, but few have matched CATL’s combination of charging speed, longevity, and infrastructure rollout for light commercial vehicles.

Historical Context

CATL has seen significant growth in recent years, with a 39% year-over-year increase in battery sales volume in 2025. The company held a 37.9% share of the global battery market in 2024, and EV batteries accounted for 73.6% of its total sales in the first half of 2025. The launch of the Tectrans II further strengthens CATL’s leadership in the EV battery sector.

Why this matters

Ultra-fast charging is a critical factor for commercial EV adoption, as it directly impacts vehicle uptime and operational costs. By reducing charging times to under 7 minutes for a majority charge, CATL’s Tectrans II battery could make electric light commercial vehicles more practical for logistics and delivery operators.

The rollout of 4,000 integrated charging and battery swap stations across China also addresses infrastructure barriers, supporting the broader transition to electric mobility in commercial fleets.

What this means for buyers

Fleet operators considering electric light commercial vehicles now have access to batteries that can be rapidly charged, minimizing downtime. Buyers should look for vehicles equipped with CATL’s Tectrans II battery, especially if operating in regions where the new integrated charging stations are available.

As charging infrastructure expands, the practicality and appeal of electric logistics vehicles are set to increase, making 2026 a pivotal year for commercial EV adoption in China and potentially beyond.
