ChargePoint and Onvo have announced plans to install ultra-fast EV chargers at 12 key highway travel plazas across Pennsylvania and New York. This initiative aims to make long-distance electric vehicle travel more convenient by addressing gaps in fast-charging infrastructure along major routes.
Ultra-Fast Charging Rollout
The first phase of the project will see ChargePoint Express Plus DC fast chargers installed at Onvo travel plazas. These locations are strategically positioned along highways 80, 81, and 78 in Pennsylvania, as well as highway 90 in New York State.
ChargePoint’s Express Plus platform is designed for high-traffic areas and can deliver up to 500 kW of charging power, depending on the site configuration. The system is modular, allowing multiple EVs to charge simultaneously from a shared power source, and supports both CCS1 and NACS connectors.

Onvo’s Expanding Network
Onvo, headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania, operates 42 travel plazas and convenience stores across central and northeastern Pennsylvania and upstate New York. These locations offer a range of amenities, including food and shopping, making them convenient stops for travelers.
According to Harman Aulakh, Onvo’s vice president of marketing, ‘Partnering with ChargePoint allows us to best serve all drivers needing to charge their vehicles along our nation’s highways.’ Onvo views the addition of EV charging as a key step in preparing for the increasing number of electric vehicles on US roads.
Competitor Comparison
ChargePoint’s expansion comes as other charging networks, such as Tesla Supercharger and Electrify America, continue to grow their presence along major US highways. While Tesla’s network is known for its reliability and speed, ChargePoint’s new Express Plus chargers match or exceed the power output of many existing stations, offering up to 500 kW and supporting multiple connector types.
Historical Context
Global EV sales increased by 20% in 2025, reflecting a strong upward trend in electric vehicle adoption. ChargePoint managed approximately 342,000 active charging ports as of January 2025, highlighting its significant role in the charging infrastructure market.
Why this matters
The rollout of ultra-fast chargers at Onvo travel plazas addresses a critical need for reliable, high-speed charging along busy highway corridors. As more drivers switch to electric vehicles, the availability of fast charging options is essential for supporting longer trips and reducing range anxiety.
By partnering with Onvo, ChargePoint is helping to close infrastructure gaps and make EV ownership more practical for a wider range of drivers.

What this means for buyers
For EV owners and prospective buyers in Pennsylvania and New York, the upcoming ChargePoint and Onvo charging sites will make highway travel more convenient. While construction and opening dates have not yet been announced, drivers can expect improved charging access at key travel plazas in the near future.
Buyers considering an EV for long-distance travel should monitor the rollout of these new sites, as they may influence route planning and charging convenience.
