China has set a new milestone in automotive exports, shipping more than 1 million vehicles abroad in June 2026. For the first time, New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) made up over half of these exports, highlighting the country’s growing influence in the global EV market.
Record-Breaking Export Figures
According to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on July 9, China exported 1.037 million vehicles in June 2026. This marks an 11.6% increase from the previous month and a 75.1% jump compared to June last year.
For the first half of 2026, total vehicle exports reached 5.096 million units, representing a year-on-year growth of 65.3%. These figures have already surpassed industry expectations, with CAAM’s initial 2026 forecast set at 7.4 million units for the full year.

NEVs Lead the Charge
June 2026 saw New Energy Vehicle (NEV) exports hit 523,000 units, a 1.6-fold increase year-on-year. For the first time, NEVs accounted for more than 50% of China’s monthly vehicle exports.
In the first half of 2026, NEV exports totaled 2.355 million units, making up 46.2% of all vehicle exports. This shift underscores the rapid adoption and global demand for Chinese electric and hybrid vehicles.
Growth Drivers and Regional Demand
Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), pointed to China’s robust NEV supply chain and cost advantages in battery, motor, and electronic control systems as key factors behind the export surge.
Chinese vehicles have also managed to command a premium of approximately 10% in the European market. Meanwhile, demand is rising sharply in regions such as ASEAN, the Middle East, and Russia. Data from the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) shows vehicle demand grew by 35% in Vietnam, 15% in Thailand, and 10% in Russia during the first five months of 2026.

Competitor Comparison
Chinese automakers are now outpacing traditional global giants like Volkswagen and Toyota in the export of NEVs. While established brands have been slower to electrify their lineups, Chinese manufacturers have rapidly expanded their global presence, especially in emerging markets and Europe.
Why this matters
China’s achievement of exporting over 1 million vehicles in a single month, with NEVs making up the majority, signals a major shift in the global automotive landscape. The country’s ability to scale up production and meet international demand for electric vehicles is reshaping global supply chains and market dynamics.
With NEVs now representing a significant share of exports, China is positioned as a leading force in the transition to electric mobility worldwide.
What this means for buyers
Buyers in regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Russia, and Europe can expect to see a greater variety of competitively priced Chinese NEVs entering their markets. As Chinese brands continue to expand, consumers will have more options for electric and hybrid vehicles, often with advanced features and technology.
Those considering a new EV or hybrid should watch for new arrivals from China, as these models are likely to offer strong value and up-to-date technology.
