China has surpassed the milestone of exporting more than one million vehicles in a single month for the second time in a row, with electric and plugin vehicles making up the majority of these exports. July saw a surge in new energy vehicle shipments, reflecting the country’s growing influence in the global automotive market.
Record-Breaking Export Numbers
In July, China exported a total of 1.043 million vehicles, marking a 0.6% increase from June and an 81.3% jump compared to the same month last year. This achievement follows the country’s first-ever month of exporting over one million vehicles just the month prior.
Electric and plugin vehicles played a significant role in this growth. Of the total exports, 553,000 were new energy vehicles, representing a 5.7% rise from June. These plugin vehicles accounted for more than half of all vehicle exports from China last month.
Growth in New Energy Vehicle Exports
The export of new energy vehicles has seen rapid expansion, with July’s figure of 553,000 units reflecting a substantial increase compared to previous months. This growth highlights China’s position as a leading exporter of electric and plugin vehicles worldwide.
Expanding Global Footprint
Chinese automakers are also expanding their manufacturing presence abroad. Chery, for example, recently acquired a Nissan factory in South Africa to produce electric vehicles locally, further strengthening China’s global automotive reach.
Belt and Road Initiative Markets Drive Value
China’s automobile exports to Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) markets have also seen significant growth. “In the first half of the year, the value of China’s automobile product exports to BRI markets reached $83.67 billion, up 30.8 percent year-on-year,” according to China Daily.
Why this matters
China’s ability to export over one million vehicles in a single month, with more than half being new energy vehicles, underscores the country’s growing dominance in the global automotive industry. The rapid increase in both volume and value of exports, especially to BRI markets, signals a shift in the global supply chain for electric and plugin vehicles.
What this means for buyers
For consumers, the surge in Chinese vehicle exports means greater availability and potentially more competitive pricing for electric and plugin vehicles worldwide. Buyers should watch for new models and brands entering their local markets, as Chinese automakers continue to expand their international presence.
