China NEV Sales Drop 9% in Early July as Market Faces Seasonal Slowdown

Retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China fell 9% year-on-year in the first week of July, according to new data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Despite the decline, NEVs maintained a strong presence in the market, with a penetration rate above 60%. The figures highlight ongoing challenges for the auto sector during a traditionally slow sales period.

NEV Sales Decline in Early July

From July 1 to 5, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China totaled 103,000 units, representing a 9% decrease compared to the same period last year and a 6% drop from the previous month. Wholesale NEV sales reached 83,000 units, down 20% year-on-year and 15% from the prior month.

Despite these declines, NEVs accounted for 60.5% of all passenger car retail sales during the period, underscoring their continued dominance in the Chinese market.

Broader Passenger Car Market Trends

Overall passenger car retail sales in China reached 169,000 units in the first week of July, down 15% year-on-year but up 4% from the previous month. Average daily retail sales stood at 34,000 units.

Cumulative passenger car retail sales for the year have reached 8.87 million, a 20% decrease compared to the same period last year. Wholesale sales by Chinese passenger car manufacturers totaled 127,000 units from July 1 to 5, down 35% year-on-year and 13% from the previous month.

Historical Context and Year-to-Date Performance

So far in 2026, China’s retail sales of passenger NEVs have reached 4.81 million units, marking a 14% decline from the same period last year. In contrast, wholesale NEV sales have grown to 6.87 million units, up 5% year-on-year.

The penetration rate for NEVs in manufacturers’ wholesale sales stood at 65.5% in early July, remaining above the retail penetration rate.

Production Shifts: Conventional vs. Hybrid Vehicles

Production of conventional fuel light vehicles in China totaled 90,000 units in the first week of July, a 42% decrease from the same period last year but a 17% increase from the previous month.

Meanwhile, combined production of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles reached 78,000 units, up 15% year-on-year and 59% from the previous month.

Competitor Comparison

NEVs have shown greater resilience than conventional gasoline vehicles, supported by ongoing product upgrades and government policies. While NEV sales declined, the drop was less severe than the 42% year-on-year decrease in conventional fuel vehicle production, highlighting the shifting market dynamics in favor of electrified vehicles.

Why this matters

The latest figures illustrate the seasonal challenges facing China’s auto market, with both NEV and overall passenger car sales experiencing declines. However, NEVs continue to capture a growing share of the market, reflecting consumer preference shifts and the impact of supportive policies.

Understanding these trends is crucial for automakers, investors, and policymakers as they navigate a market in transition, balancing short-term slowdowns against long-term growth in electrification.

What this means for buyers

For consumers, the current market slowdown may present opportunities as automakers and dealers continue to offer discounts and incentives to stimulate demand. Buyers considering an NEV may find favorable deals, but should also be aware that seasonal factors and ongoing price competition could influence availability and pricing in the coming months.
