Exeed EX6 Revealed in China as Updated Omoda 9, Targets Q3 2026 Launch

Chery has officially unveiled the Exeed EX6 crossover in China, presenting it as the updated Omoda 9. The new model features Exeed’s latest Perpetua design language and a plug-in hybrid system, with plans for a domestic launch in Q3 2026 and potential overseas expansion.

Design and Features

The Exeed EX6 is a facelift of the Exeed Yaoguang SUV-coupe, which is known in foreign markets as the Omoda 9 (C9) or Exeed RX. The EX6 adopts the Perpetua design language, introducing a fully redesigned front end with a frameless grille, split headlights, and a large air intake. The rear bumper features horizontally aligned reflectors, while the rear end sports a single taillight unit.

Additional design elements include semi-hidden door handles and a LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof. The EX6 measures 4,830 mm (~190 inches) in length, 1,920 mm (~76 inches) in width, and 1,680 mm (~66 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm (~110 inches). This makes it 55 mm longer and 9 mm higher than the current Omoda 9.

Powertrain and Performance

The Exeed EX6 is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system, featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 115 kW (154 hp). Fuel consumption in PHEV mode ranges from 0.86 to 1.31 liters per 100 km. The vehicle’s top speed is 180 km/h.

While details about the electric motors for the EX6 have not been disclosed, the 4WD version of the ongoing Exeed Yaoguang C-DM offers a combined output of 455 kW (610 hp) and can accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

Market Position and Regional Availability

The EX6 will join the EX line, which currently includes the EX7 crossover with electronic mechanical braking. Chery, Exeed’s parent company, has a long history as a leading Chinese car exporter, and the EX6 is expected to be offered in overseas markets following its domestic debut.

In China, the EX6 is scheduled for release in Q3 2026. It is likely to be marketed internationally as the updated Omoda 9 or as a facelifted Exeed RX.

Competitor Comparison

The Exeed EX6 enters a competitive segment alongside models like the Exeed Exlantix MX, which is priced at $23,612 (~AUD 33,387) and features lidar-based autonomous hardware. Another key competitor is the Exeed RX PHEV, which shares a similar SUV format and plug-in hybrid powertrain and has previously been priced between $25,200 (~AUD 35,632) and $28,000 (~AUD 39,591).

Both competitors offer high-tech features and are positioned within the mid-size EREV SUV segment in China, making the EX6’s updated design and hybrid system notable for buyers considering alternatives.

Historical Context

Cumulative sales of Exeed models reached 4,334 units in 2025, reflecting steady growth for the brand. Exeed currently accounts for 0.36% of Chery Auto’s total sales, indicating a niche but growing presence in the market.

Despite the introduction of advanced models, domestic demand for certain variants, such as the Yaoguang C-DM, remains low, with only 73 units delivered in May 2026 according to China EV DataTracker.

Why this matters

The launch of the Exeed EX6 demonstrates Chery’s ongoing commitment to expanding its plug-in hybrid lineup and updating its design language. With its entry into the mid-size SUV segment, the EX6 aims to attract buyers seeking advanced technology and efficiency.

The model’s introduction also highlights the increasing competition among Chinese automakers in the new energy vehicle market, as brands strive to differentiate themselves with design, performance, and hybrid technology.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in mid-size plug-in hybrid SUVs will find the Exeed EX6 to be a fresh option with updated styling and efficient fuel consumption. Those considering alternatives should compare the EX6 with the Exeed Exlantix MX and Exeed RX PHEV, especially in terms of features and pricing.

With the EX6 set for a Q3 2026 launch in China and likely overseas availability, prospective buyers should watch for regional release details and evaluate how the model fits their needs relative to established competitors.
