GAC Aion Ray 7: New Electric Sedan Filed in China, Launches Ray Series

GAC Aion has officially filed the Ray 7 electric sedan with Chinese regulators, marking the debut of its new Ray series. The Ray 7 stands out with its fastback design, Huawei-supplied motor, and battery options from CATL and GAC Aion’s own unit. Positioned as a ‘super electric sedan loved by young people,’ the Ray 7 is set to be the first model to feature GAC Aion’s new logo.

Ray 7: Design and Dimensions

The GAC Aion Ray 7 is a 5-seat battery electric sedan measuring 4,960 mm (~195 inches) in length, 1,900 mm (~75 inches) in width, and 1,455 mm (~57 inches) in height. It features a wheelbase of 2,920 mm (~115 inches), giving it a low-slung, wide-body stance with a fastback profile. Regulatory images show a closed-off front fascia, emphasizing its aerodynamic design.

Powertrain and Battery Options

The Ray 7 is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor supplied by Huawei, delivering a peak output of 180 kW (241 hp). The sedan has a top speed of 180 km/h (~112 mph) and a curb weight of either 1,720 kg (~3,792 lbs) or 1,855 kg (~4,090 lbs), depending on the configuration.

Two lithium iron phosphate battery options are available: one uses cells from CATL, while the other is equipped with batteries from Yinpai Battery, GAC Aion’s own battery unit.

Features and Customization

Buyers can choose from a range of optional equipment, including roof-mounted LiDAR, fender cameras, multiple wheel designs, various brake caliper colors, and a ‘Ray 01’ rear badge. Some versions can be configured without the roof-mounted LiDAR and fender cameras, allowing for further personalization.

Technology and Positioning

GAC Aion unveiled the Ray series on July 28, describing the Ray 7 as a “super electric sedan loved by young people.” The Ray 7 will be the first model to use GAC Aion’s new logo and will feature what the company calls a ‘super chassis’ with a chip-level integrated drive-and-control architecture. The company has also stated that the Ray 7’s driver-assistance system will use a LiDAR-based solution and algorithms derived from technology used for Level 4 autonomous driving.

Market Filing and Sales Performance

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) included the Ray 7 in its latest batch of new vehicle filings, paving the way for its market launch. GAC Aion’s sales have rebounded in 2026, with 28,807 vehicles sold in July, up 36.37% year-on-year. For the first seven months of the year, sales reached 210,386 units, a 62.08% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth reverses the decline seen in 2025, when full-year sales fell by 22.62%.

Why this matters

The filing of the Ray 7 marks a significant step for GAC Aion as it launches a new series aimed at younger buyers and introduces new branding and technology. The Ray 7’s combination of a Huawei-supplied motor, advanced battery options, and customizable features highlights the increasing competition and innovation in China’s electric sedan market.

With GAC Aion’s sales rebounding strongly in 2026, the Ray 7 could play a key role in maintaining this momentum and attracting new customers to the brand.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in the GAC Aion Ray 7 should watch for further announcements regarding pricing, driving range, and launch timing, as these details have not yet been disclosed. The model’s focus on technology, customization, and youthful appeal may make it a strong contender in the electric sedan segment once it becomes available.
