Geely Chairman Li Shufu has sharply criticised the use of low-cost manufacturing shortcuts, warning that such practices threaten the long-term survival of automotive brands. Speaking at the 2026 China Automotive Chongqing Forum, Li outlined a new strategic direction for Geely, emphasising quality, safety, and sustainable growth over rapid, low-cost production.

Strategic Realignment and Corporate Overhaul
Li Shufu announced a major restructuring for Geely, moving away from cheap production models and focusing on long-term product viability. This shift follows strong May 2026 delivery figures, with the new Geely Geome Xingyuan leading the portfolio at 38,751 units delivered.
Under the Taizhou Declaration framework, Geely will close redundant manufacturing entities and concentrate capital into Geely Automobile Holdings Limited. The restructuring aims to streamline operations, eliminate internal administrative friction, and build a clean corporate governance structure.

Emphasis on Technical Quality and Safety
Li Shufu strongly criticised short-term vehicle development focused on immediate financial returns, stating that automotive safety directly impacts human lives. He stressed that engineering processes must be transparent and verifiable, rejecting cheap copycat practices.
He warned that superficial engineering and fast-food style product philosophies introduce severe long-term liabilities, as vehicles require rigorous lifecycle testing. Li emphasised that authentic technological differentiation is essential for future success.
Sales Performance and Market Data
May 2026 registration data highlights the new Xingyuan, which captured 43.4% of Geely’s brand sales. The Atlas L accounted for 15.0%, while the Coolray secured 14.4%. The premium Monjaro crossover delivered 11,099 units, and the Preface sedan accounted for 8,592 units, or 9.6% of total volume.
Smaller models such as the Panda mini, Okavango L, Icon, Binrui, and Boyue REV made up the remainder, with the Panda mini selling 2,728 units and the Okavango L finding 714 buyers.
Competitor Comparison
Geely’s strategic shift comes as it aims to compete directly with BYD, the current market leader in China. While BYD continues to dominate the mass-market EV segment, Geely’s focus on quality and innovation is intended to strengthen its position and challenge BYD’s lead by 2026.
Strategic Longevity and Global Positioning
Li Shufu views regulatory compliance and intellectual property defence as fundamental values for Geely. He rejects accelerated product lifecycles that compromise structural durability, aiming to build a culture capable of navigating prolonged market consolidation.
Centralising capital resources and maintaining structural discipline are seen as key to ensuring long-term operational continuity and protecting financial margins in a consolidating global automotive sector.
Why this matters
Geely’s move to prioritise engineering quality and operational discipline signals a significant shift in China’s competitive automotive landscape. With prior year sales of 2.17 million vehicles globally in 2024, up 39% year-on-year, Geely holds a substantial share in China’s EV market and is targeting 2.7 million units in 2025.
This strategy not only positions Geely to better compete with established leaders like BYD but also sets a precedent for sustainable growth and long-term brand value in an increasingly crowded market.
What this means for buyers
For consumers, Geely’s renewed focus on quality and safety may result in more reliable and durable vehicles, even if it means fewer low-cost options in the short term. Buyers can expect Geely models to emphasise long-term value and engineering integrity as the company consolidates its product lines.
Those considering a Geely vehicle should watch for updates on new models and restructuring outcomes, as the brand aims to deliver higher standards and challenge market leaders.
