Geely and Mercedes-Benz Smart #2 Micro EV Revealed in Regulatory Filings

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has officially published regulatory filings for the Smart #2, a new micro EV developed by Geely and Mercedes-Benz. The two-seater city car, produced by Zhejiang Haoqing Automotive Co., Ltd., is designed for urban commuting and offers a range of customisation options.

Smart #2: Compact Dimensions and Urban Focus

The Smart #2 is available in two body length options: 2,751 mm (~108.3 inches) and 2,764 mm (~108.8 inches). Both versions share a width of 1,669 mm (~65.7 inches) and a height of 1,555 mm (~61.2 inches), with a wheelbase of 1,875 mm (~73.8 inches). The curb weight is listed at 1,130 kg (~2,491 lbs), while the gross weight is 1,315 kg (~2,899 lbs).

Designed as a two-seater, the Smart #2 is intended for city driving and maneuverability in tight spaces. The car can reach a top speed of 140 km/h (~87 mph), making it suitable for urban and short-distance travel.

Powertrain and Safety Features

The Smart #2 is powered by a TZ160XS00A drive motor developed by Infimotion (Jiaxing) Co., Ltd., delivering 60 kW (80 hp). Energy comes from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with cells produced by CATL and final assembly managed by Geely.

Standard safety equipment includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and an Event Data Recorder (EDR). An onboard Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) device is also available as an option.

Customisation and Options

Buyers can select between two tyre specifications: 165/65R15 / 185/60R15 or 185/50R16 / 205/45R16, which correspond to different track parameters. The Smart #2 also offers a variety of optional features, including a black or body-colored roof, hardtop, specialised headlights, radars, side decorative panels, rear ornaments, front grilles, mirror accents, and multiple wheel rim designs.

Certain configurations allow for the omission of radars and cameras, giving buyers flexibility in equipment and appearance.

Why this matters

The regulatory filing of the Smart #2 marks a significant step for Geely and Mercedes-Benz as they expand their electric vehicle offerings in the microcar segment. The Smart #2’s compact size, electric powertrain, and range of customisation options are tailored for city dwellers seeking efficient urban mobility.

With its official filing, the Smart #2 is moving closer to market availability, reflecting ongoing demand for small, practical EVs in China’s rapidly evolving urban landscape.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in compact electric vehicles for city use will soon have another option with the Smart #2. Its small footprint, safety features, and customisation choices make it a practical choice for urban environments.

Those considering a micro EV should watch for further announcements regarding pricing, availability, and detailed specifications as the Smart #2 approaches its market launch.
