Global electric vehicle (EV) sales hit a new milestone in June 2026, with 2 million units sold worldwide. However, the latest figures reveal a growing divide between major markets, as Europe accelerates its transition to EVs while the US market loses momentum.
Europe Leads Global EV Growth
According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, Europe recorded its strongest month ever for EV sales in June 2026. Sales across the continent jumped 28% compared to May and 31% year over year.
Countries such as France, Denmark, Spain, and Portugal all set new monthly records. In France, Renault captured a 20% share of the EV market, with four of the top five best-selling EVs bearing the Renault badge. The new Renault Twingo quickly became the third-best-selling EV in the country.
Volkswagen Group also began deliveries of its new affordable EV lineup, including the Volkswagen ID.Polo, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq, expanding options for European buyers.

US Market Slows After Policy Changes
In contrast, North American EV sales have declined 20% so far in 2026. Benchmark Mineral Intelligence attributes this drop primarily to the end of the US federal EV tax credit in September 2025.
Sales at major automakers GM and Ford have fallen even more sharply than the overall US EV market, as both companies adjust their EV strategies.
Meanwhile, Canada marked a milestone with the arrival of the first Chinese-built Lotus Eletre SUVs in early July. Under Canada’s tariff quota agreement, up to 49,000 Chinese-built EVs can enter at a reduced 6.1% tariff, compared to the previous 100% surtax.
China Focuses on Exports Amid Domestic Slowdown
China’s domestic EV market has softened, with June sales down 11% year over year and year-to-date sales down 14%. In response, Chinese automakers are ramping up exports, shipping nearly 500,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) abroad in June 2026—a new monthly record.
Europe remains a key destination for these exports. After the European Union imposed tariffs on Chinese battery EVs in 2024, many Chinese automakers shifted their focus to plug-in hybrids, which continue to see rising sales in Europe.
Competitor Comparison
Chinese automakers continue to dominate the global EV landscape, holding over 65% market share in 2024. European brands like Renault and Volkswagen are expanding their affordable EV offerings, while US brands such as GM and Ford are experiencing declining sales in 2026. The competitive gap between regions is widening, with Europe and China leading innovation and volume.
Why this matters
The latest sales data highlights a significant shift in the global EV market. Europe’s rapid growth is being driven by new incentives, high fuel prices, and a broader selection of affordable EVs. Meanwhile, the US is falling behind due to reduced policy support, which is impacting both consumer demand and automaker strategies.

China’s pivot to exports underscores the importance of international markets as domestic demand cools. The evolving landscape will influence global supply chains, pricing, and the pace of EV adoption worldwide.
What this means for buyers
For buyers in Europe, the expanding range of affordable EVs and strong government incentives make this an opportune time to consider switching to electric. In North America, shoppers may find fewer incentives and a slower rollout of new models, so comparing options and monitoring policy changes is crucial.
Buyers in China and other regions should watch for increased export activity, which could affect local availability and pricing. Staying informed about tariffs and trade policies will be important for those considering imported EVs.
