GWM Launches Wey V8X Hybrid SUV With Up to 402 km Electric Range and Aggressive Pricing

GWM has introduced the Wey V8X, a five-seat hybrid SUV targeting the premium segment with a blend of strong performance, advanced technology, and competitive pricing. The new model arrives as a smaller sibling to the V9X, offering multiple configurations and incentives for family buyers.

Wey V8X: Performance and Powertrain

The Wey V8X is the second production model built on GWM’s Global One S platform and is positioned as a more compact alternative to the six-seat V9X. It is available in both Luxury Family and Sport versions, with the Luxury Family variant measuring 5,125 mm (~202 inches) in length and a 3,050 mm (~120 inches) wheelbase, while the Sport version is 5,040 mm (~198 inches) long with a 2,968 mm (~117 inches) wheelbase.

Under the hood, the V8X features GWM’s Super Hi4 hybrid system paired with a four-speed hybrid-specific transmission, offering a choice between 1.5 T and 2.0 T engines. The top-end Ultra+ trim delivers a maximum system output of 500 kW (670 hp) and 930 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds with a full battery.

Battery, Range, and Charging

The Luxury Family Ultra and Ultra+ versions are equipped with a 66.6 kWh ternary lithium battery and utilize an 800-volt platform. These variants support 6C fast charging, enabling a charge from 30% to 80% in just nine minutes. Both offer up to 402 km (~250 miles) of CLTC all-electric range and 312 km (~194 miles) under WLTC standards. The Ultra version boasts a combined CLTC range of 1,659 km (~1,031 miles).

Chassis, Technology, and Interior Features

The V8X incorporates GWM’s Super Intelligent Chassis, which includes 20-degree bidirectional rear-wheel steering and a turning radius of 5 meters (~16.4 feet). It also features a closed dual-chamber air suspension with 100 mm (~3.9 inches) of travel and EDC continuously variable damping shock absorbers.

Inside, the V8X offers a 15.6-inch dual screen, a 19- or 25-speaker audio system depending on the trim, and options such as NAPPA leather and a 17.3-inch rear screen. The vehicle is equipped with the Coffee Pilot 4 assisted driving system, powered by Nvidia’s 700 TOPS Thor-U chip, one LiDAR unit, and 11 cameras. It supports parking-spot-to-parking-spot Navigation on Autopilot (NOA).

Pricing and Incentives

The Wey V8X is available in five configurations, with retail prices ranging from $35,489 (~AUD 50,279) to $46,736 (~AUD 66,214). For a limited time, promotional prices start at $33,565 (~AUD 47,553) and go up to $44,813 (~AUD 63,488). The Sport Max is offered at $33,565 (~AUD 47,553), the Sport Ultra at $39,485 (~AUD 55,940), the Luxury Family Max at $36,525 (~AUD 51,747), the Ultra at $39,485 (~AUD 55,940), and the Ultra+ at $44,813 (~AUD 63,488).

GWM is also providing incentives for family buyers, offering a discount of $444 (~AUD 629) for each GWM vehicle already owned within the same household, up to a maximum of $1,480 (~AUD 2,097) for four or more vehicles.

Competitor Comparison

The Wey V8X enters a highly competitive segment in China, facing rivals such as the Huawei-backed Aito M7, Avatr 07L, Voyah Free, and Audi E7X. It also competes with all-electric models like the Onvo L80 from Nio and the IM LS6 from IM Motors.

Why this matters

The launch of the Wey V8X demonstrates GWM’s ambition to expand its presence in the premium hybrid SUV market by offering advanced technology, strong performance, and attractive pricing. With its combination of long electric range, fast charging, and a suite of intelligent features, the V8X is positioned to appeal to families and tech-focused buyers.

The introduction of incentives for existing GWM owners and the promise of an upcoming all-electric version further highlight the brand’s strategy to retain and grow its customer base in a rapidly evolving market.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering a premium hybrid SUV in China now have a new option with the Wey V8X, which offers a compelling mix of performance, range, and technology at a competitive price point. Those already owning GWM vehicles can benefit from additional discounts, making the V8X an even more attractive proposition.

Potential customers should compare the V8X’s features and pricing with direct competitors and watch for the upcoming all-electric version if a fully electric powertrain is a priority.
