GWM is preparing to launch an updated version of its Ora Ballet Cat electric hatchback, known for its resemblance to the classic Volkswagen Beetle. The refreshed model brings a significant power increase and may adopt a new name as part of the brand’s evolving strategy.
Power Boost and Technical Upgrades
The updated Ora Ballet Cat features a new QT36TZ220001 electric motor delivering 150 kW (201 hp), up from the previous 126 kW (169 hp). This marks a 40 hp increase over the outgoing model. The top speed has also been raised from 155 km/h to 180 km/h.
The car continues to use an LFP battery pack supplied by GWM subsidiary Svolt, though the exact capacity of the updated pack has not yet been disclosed.
Design and Features
The Ora Ballet Cat retains its distinctive exterior, with styling heavily inspired by the Volkswagen Beetle. Key design elements include pronounced wheel arches, an almost flat windscreen, a sloped roofline, and headlights integrated into the fenders. Chrome-plated accents are found throughout the body, and the charging ports are located in the front fenders.
Inside, the model is positioned as a car for women, offering features such as a ‘Lady Driving Mode’ that maintains extra distance from vehicles ahead, a selfie camera, and a ‘Warm Man Mode’ that adjusts climate settings with one click.

Branding and Market Position
Originally launched in 2022 with a price range of $28,446 (~AUD 40,926) to $32,867 (~AUD 47,287), the Ora Ballet Cat has seen modest sales, with 8,523 units delivered from July 2022 to June 2026 according to China EV DataTracker.
GWM is considering renaming the updated model to Ora 6, aligning with its recent shift away from ‘cat’ branding. The company has already introduced the Ora 5 hatchback, now available in Italy, and plans to launch the Ora 7 electric wagon soon.
Why this matters
The Ora Ballet Cat’s update demonstrates GWM’s commitment to refreshing its lineup, even for models with limited sales. The power increase and potential rebranding reflect ongoing efforts to keep the model relevant in a competitive market.
With unique features aimed at female drivers and a design that stands out, the Ballet Cat continues to occupy a niche segment in China’s EV landscape.
What this means for buyers
Buyers interested in retro-styled electric hatchbacks will find the updated Ora Ballet Cat offers more performance than before. Those considering this model should watch for official announcements regarding the new name and battery specifications as GWM finalizes the launch.
