German energy giant RWE has given the green light to its proposed eight-hour big battery project in south-west NSW and has contracted Tesla to supply its Megapack battery for the 400 megawatt-hour (MWh) installation. The 50 MW, 400 MWh Limondale battery will be constructed adjacent to RWE’s existing 249 MW Limondale solar farm near Balranald. This project will be the first eight-hour battery built in Australia, having emerged as the surprise winner of the NSW government’s first long-duration storage tender last year.
