Leapmotor Launches A05 Electric Hatchback With Up To 510 km Range

Leapmotor has officially introduced the A05, a compact all-electric hatchback, at an event in Hangzhou. The A05 enters the market with a starting price of $9,459 (~AUD 13,401) and offers up to 510 km (~317 miles) of range, targeting buyers looking for affordable EV options.

A05 Launch Details and Features

Leapmotor unveiled the A05 in Hangzhou, with the launch event delayed by a day due to Typhoon Dolphin. The A05 is the second model on Leapmotor’s A platform, following the A10 small SUV.

The A05 is available with two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options: a 39.8-kWh pack offering a CLTC range of 405 km (~252 miles), and a 53-kWh pack providing a CLTC range of 510 km (~317 miles). Buyers can choose between a 70-kW or 90-kW single motor, both delivering a top speed of 160 km/h.

The long-range variant supports fast charging, allowing a 30% to 80% charge in just 16 minutes. Interior technology includes a Qualcomm 8295 cockpit chip, an 8.88-inch instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch center display, and a 12-speaker audio system.

Advanced Technology and LiDAR Version

Starting at $12,716 (~AUD 18,014), the 510 LiDAR version of the A05 adds LiDAR sensors and a Qualcomm 8650 chip. This variant supports 43 assisted driving functions, including door-to-door navigation.

Leapmotor states that the A05 is the only premium hatchback in its class to offer both LiDAR and door-to-door navigation capability.

Dimensions and Practicality

The A05 measures 4,200 mm (~165 inches) in length, 1,800 mm (~71 inches) in width, and 1,560 mm (~61 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,605 mm (~103 inches).

Trunk space starts at 474 liters (~16.7 cubic feet) and expands to 1,308 liters (~46.2 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded down.

Sales Performance and Market Context

Leapmotor delivered 101,267 vehicles globally in July, marking its first month above 100,000 units and a 102.01% increase year-on-year. In the first seven months of 2026, Leapmotor’s deliveries reached 457,754 units, about 46% of its 1 million annual target. The company now needs to deliver over 108,000 vehicles per month for the rest of the year to meet this goal.

The A05 follows the A10 small SUV, which went on sale in March with prices from $9,740 (~AUD 13,799) to $12,849 (~AUD 18,203) and sold 26,424 units in July.

Competitor Comparison

The A05 enters a highly competitive segment in China, where Geely Auto’s Xingyuan led the sub-$14,803 (~AUD 20,971) market in July with 32,306 units sold. Other notable competitors include the Wuling Bingo Pro and Chery’s QQ3 EV, each with over 10,000 units sold in July.

The A05 will also compete directly with BYD’s Dolphin, which achieved 34,910 sales in July, up 75.74% year-on-year.

Why this matters

The launch of the Leapmotor A05 adds another option for buyers seeking affordable electric hatchbacks in China. With its combination of range, technology, and pricing, the A05 is positioned to attract attention in a segment where sales volumes are high and competition is intense.

Leapmotor’s ability to scale up deliveries with models like the A05 will be crucial as the company pursues its ambitious annual target.

What this means for buyers

Buyers looking for an affordable electric hatchback in China now have another choice with the Leapmotor A05, which offers a range of up to 510 km (~317 miles) and advanced features such as LiDAR-assisted driving. Those interested in additional benefits can take advantage of limited-time offers, including up to $1,581 (~AUD 2,240) in perks, two years of interest-free financing, and four lifetime free warranty items.

Shoppers should compare the A05 with rivals like the BYD Dolphin, Geely Xingyuan, Wuling Bingo Pro, and Chery QQ3 EV to find the best fit for their needs.
