Li Auto to Launch Next-Generation Li L6 SUV on July 16 Amid Slumping Sales

Li Auto has announced it will unveil the next-generation Li L6 extended-range SUV on July 16, aiming to reinvigorate demand for one of its core models. The launch comes as sales of the current Li L6 have sharply declined, with many customers waiting for the updated version.

Next-Generation Li L6 Set for July 16 Debut

Li Auto will officially launch the revamped Li L6 on July 16, with the event scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm Beijing Time. The company described the new model as an ‘all-around all-wheel-drive SUV, the king of experience.’

A new color option, ‘Dune Yellow,’ will be available, which Li Auto said was ‘born for the wilderness.’ The automaker also highlighted the new interior, stating it ‘looks good in the daytime and looks good at night, too.’

Specifications and Upgrades

The next-generation Li L6 retains its body dimensions at 4,935 mm (~194 inches) in length, 1,960 mm (~77 inches) in width, and 1,735 mm (~68 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm (~115 inches).

The model continues to use a 1.5T turbocharged range extender engine with a maximum output of 113 kW. A key upgrade is the increase in battery capacity from 36.8 kWh to 51 kWh, which is expected to improve electric driving range.

Current Model and Pricing

The current Li L6 is the entry-level offering in Li Auto’s L-series extended-range electric vehicle lineup, available in Pro and Max configurations. The starting price for the Pro is $36,725 (~AUD 52,967), while the Max starts at $41,136 (~AUD 59,328).

The next-generation model may see a price increase, but official pricing details have not yet been released.

Sales Performance and Company Outlook

Sales of the current Li L6 have dropped significantly, with just 915 units delivered in June—a 94.44% decrease year-on-year. This decline is partly attributed to consumers waiting for the new model.

Li Auto delivered 30,895 vehicles in June, down 14.84% from the previous year, and 193,472 vehicles in the first half of this year, a 5.13% decrease compared to the same period last year. The company also reported a net loss of $338.1M (~AUD 487.7M) in the first quarter, with its gross margin falling to 7.9% from 20.5% a year earlier.

L-Series Model Updates

The Li L6 revamp is part of a broader refresh of Li Auto’s L-series extended-range models. The company launched the revamped Li L9 on May 15 and introduced the all-new Li L8 on June 23, which now features a five-seat layout instead of six.

Li Auto’s L-series also includes the Li L7, though details on an updated version of this model have not yet been disclosed.

Why this matters

The launch of the next-generation Li L6 is a critical move for Li Auto as it seeks to reverse declining sales and regain momentum in the competitive Chinese SUV market. With significant upgrades in battery capacity and interior design, the new model aims to attract buyers who have been waiting for improvements.

Given the company’s recent financial challenges and shrinking margins, the success of the revamped Li L6 could play a key role in stabilizing Li Auto’s performance in the coming months.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering the Li L6 may want to wait for the official launch on July 16 to see the full list of upgrades and final pricing. The new model promises a larger battery and refreshed interior, which could offer better value compared to the outgoing version.

Those interested in Li Auto’s L-series should also watch for updates on the L7, as the company continues to refresh its extended-range lineup.
