Li Auto to Launch Next-Generation Mega MPV on September 2 with Major Interior and Tech Upgrades

Li Auto has announced the launch date for its next-generation Mega MPV, set for September 2, 2026. The new model brings a host of upgrades, including a redesigned interior, enhanced smart driving hardware, and a focus on original Chinese automotive design. The company aims to boost demand for its flagship electric MPV after a period of declining sales.

Next-Generation Mega: Launch Details and Design

Li Auto will unveil the next-generation Li Mega at a launch event beginning at 7:30 pm Beijing Time on September 2, 2026. The company describes the new model as a ‘next-generation mobile home,’ emphasizing a distinctive approach to both exterior and interior design.

Li Auto founder, chairman, and CEO Li Xiang stated on Weibo that the Mega showcases original Chinese automotive design, aiming to set it apart from previous models and industry trends. The streamlined body is intended to reduce drag, extend range, and improve cabin quietness, while maintaining the existing exterior design direction.

Interior and Technology Upgrades

A key highlight of the next-generation Mega is its cabin, which Li Xiang says will be distinct from all other Li Auto models. In ‘living-room mode,’ the vehicle will feature a main light covering the entire rear cabin, enhancing illumination for in-car entertainment and conversations.

According to a vehicle filing by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in June, the Home version of the Mega will include new semi-hidden door handles and additional side-facing and rear-facing solid-state LiDAR units, increasing the total LiDAR count from one to four. The cabin will also adopt a full-width integrated display and a layout inspired by the all-new Li L9 SUV.

Dimensions, Seating, and Powertrain

The next-generation Li Mega measures 5,355 mm (~211 inches) in length, 1,965 mm (~77 inches) in width, and 1,850 mm (~73 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,300 mm (~130 inches). It is 5 mm longer than the current model, while other dimensions remain unchanged.

The MPV retains a 7-seat 2/2/3 configuration. The third-row seats can be folded and flipped forward by 85 degrees, increasing the cargo area’s longitudinal length from 680 mm (~27 inches) to 1,066 mm (~42 inches).

Under the hood, the Mega uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, with the front and rear motors producing 155 kW and 258 kW, respectively. The top speed is 200 km/h. The vehicle will use a ternary lithium-ion battery supplied by CATL, though battery capacity, driving range, and charging performance have not been disclosed.

Sales Performance and Market Context

Li Mega deliveries have struggled in recent months. Deliveries fell 88.1% year-on-year to 336 units in July 2026, accounting for just 1.1% of Li Auto’s total deliveries that month. From January to July, deliveries dropped 63.1% year-on-year to 3,179 units.

The model previously reached a record 3,277 units delivered in September 2025, but a vehicle fire in October 2025 led to a recall of 11,411 units. Since November 2025, monthly deliveries have remained below 1,000 units.

Competitor Comparison

The Li Mega competes in China’s electric MPV segment against models such as the Zeekr 009, Denza D9, and Voyah Dreamer. These rivals also offer advanced smart driving features, spacious interiors, and strong performance, making the segment highly competitive.

Regional Availability

The next-generation Li Mega is set to launch in China, where Li Auto holds a 3.5% market share. There is no mention of international availability at this stage.

Why this matters

Li Auto’s update to the Mega MPV comes at a critical time, as the company seeks to reverse declining sales and regain momentum in the electric MPV market. With deliveries down significantly year-on-year and increased competition from domestic brands, the success of the next-generation Mega will be closely watched.

The focus on original design and upgraded technology reflects broader trends in China’s new energy vehicle sector, where automakers are striving to differentiate their products and appeal to increasingly discerning buyers.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering a large electric MPV in China will soon have a refreshed option with the next-generation Li Mega. Those seeking advanced smart driving features, a unique interior, and flexible seating may find the new model appealing.

However, with no details yet on battery range or charging speed, potential buyers may want to wait for the full launch event on September 2 for complete specifications and pricing.
