Lucid has issued a strong denial following a report that claimed the company was considering bankruptcy protection. The report triggered a sharp selloff in Lucid’s shares, which fell nearly 56% within an hour before partially recovering.
Bankruptcy Report Sparks Market Turmoil
A report from an EV blog alleged that Lucid was weighing two major restructuring options: filing for bankruptcy or going private. The report stated that management consulting firm AlixPartners had been tasked with advising Lucid’s board on whether to ‘seek Chapter 11 protection’ or consider taking the company private.
The news led to a rapid decline in Lucid’s stock price, which dropped from $5.51 to a low of $2.46 before closing at $4.64 by the end of regular trading. The selloff was so severe that it triggered two volatility trading halts.
Lucid Issues Strong Denial
Lucid’s head of communications, Nick Twork, responded to the rumors by calling them ‘completely false.’ Twork stated, ‘The company has sufficient liquidity to carry its operations well into next year, as recently published in its last quarterly filings, and it has not formed any special Board committee to explore the scenarios reported today.’
Twork also clarified that while Lucid has engaged AlixPartners, it is strictly to help the company improve its execution and operations. He emphasized that AlixPartners ‘has not recommended bankruptcy to management or the board.’
Recent Company Developments
Lucid has faced ongoing challenges, including a 97% decline in market capitalization since its 2021 peak. The company produced 10,274 vehicles and delivered 7,046 in the first half of this year. Lucid had previously projected producing up to 27,000 vehicles in 2026, a target that was later withdrawn before the release of second-quarter sales figures.
To address financial pressures, Lucid recently offered up to $10,000 (~AUD 14,437) off 2026 models in inventory. The company also underwent significant leadership changes, with a new CEO arriving last month and overhauling the executive team. In addition, Lucid cut 18% of its staff last month, following an earlier round of layoffs.
Why this matters
The rapid market reaction to the bankruptcy rumor highlights the volatility surrounding Lucid and the sensitivity of investors to news about the company’s financial health. Lucid’s official denial and clarification about its liquidity and ongoing restructuring efforts are crucial for restoring confidence among shareholders and customers.
What this means for buyers
For potential Lucid buyers, the company’s recent discount offers and continued production indicate that operations are ongoing despite market turbulence. However, buyers should stay informed about Lucid’s financial developments and leadership changes, as these could impact future support and product availability.
