Mazda CX-6e Adds LiDAR-Assisted Driving, Opens Pre-Sales in China

Mazda has updated its CX-6e midsize SUV with a roof-mounted LiDAR unit, introducing advanced assisted driving features for both highway and urban use. Pre-sales for the refreshed model, also known as the EZ-60, have begun in China, with LiDAR-equipped trims expected to start at $23,741 (~AUD 33,357).

LiDAR-Equipped Assisted Driving

The most significant change to the refreshed CX-6e is the addition of a roof-mounted LiDAR unit. Mazda states this upgrade brings advanced L2 assisted-driving capabilities, covering over 200 assisted driving scenarios. The LiDAR system is paired with three mmWave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 11 cameras.

According to Mazda, the new system enables Navigation-on-Autopilot (NOA) functionality in both highway and urban environments. The assisted driving features operate at speeds from 0 to 130 km/h (~0 to 81 mph) on highways and 0 to 80 km/h (~0 to 50 mph) in urban settings. The CX-6e can also perform remote, automated, and path-following parking manoeuvres.

Powertrain and Platform Details

The CX-6e is offered with both pure electric (EV) and range-extended electric (EREV) powertrains. It is built by the Changan-Mazda joint venture on Changan’s EPA1 platform and shares close ties with the Deepal S07.

EV trims feature a 77.94 kWh LFP battery from CALB, providing a CLTC range of 585 to 600 km (~364 to 373 miles). These versions use a single 190 kW (255 hp) rear motor and reach a top speed of 185 km/h. Fast charging is supported, with a 30-80% charge achievable in 15 minutes.

EREV trims combine a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated 72 kW (97 hp) range extender with the same 190 kW rear motor, offering a 31.73 kWh LFP battery from CATL–Changan and a CLTC range of 200 km (~124 miles).

Interior and Aerodynamics

Inside, the CX-6e departs from Mazda’s traditional design by minimizing physical buttons and introducing a 26.45-inch 5K infotainment screen that spans from the center to the passenger side. The driver benefits from a 50-inch heads-up display (HUD), with a 100-inch HUD available as an option.

Mazda has focused on aerodynamic efficiency, incorporating nine ducts around the hood, bumpers, and sail panels to achieve a coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.258. This figure is competitive with models like the Xiaomi YU7 (0.245 Cd) and Xpeng G9 (0.272 Cd).

Market Position and Sales Performance

The CX-6e currently retails for $17,791 (~AUD 24,997) to $24,765 (~AUD 34,795) in China, with EV trims costing about $1,484 (~AUD 2,085) more than EREV versions. LiDAR-equipped trims are expected to start at $23,741 (~AUD 33,357).

Mazda delivered 2,929 CX-6e (EZ-60) units domestically in July 2026, according to China EV DataTracker. Together with the 6e (EZ-6), new energy vehicles now account for more than half of Mazda’s China sales, making Mazda one of the few joint ventures in the country to sell more NEVs than internal combustion models.

Why this matters

The introduction of LiDAR-assisted driving in the CX-6e marks a significant technological step for Mazda in China’s competitive NEV market. By offering advanced driver assistance and a choice of EV or EREV powertrains, Mazda is expanding its appeal to tech-focused buyers and those seeking alternatives to traditional combustion vehicles.

With NEVs now making up the majority of Mazda’s sales in China, the CX-6e’s refresh could help the brand maintain momentum in a rapidly evolving segment.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in the latest driver assistance technology and flexible powertrain options will find the refreshed CX-6e a compelling choice. With pre-sales open and LiDAR-equipped trims expected to start at $23,741 (~AUD 33,357), the CX-6e offers a blend of advanced features and competitive pricing in the midsize SUV segment.

Those considering the CX-6e should review the available trims and options, especially if prioritizing assisted driving capabilities or extended electric range.
