Mercedes-AMG Previews High-Performance Electric SUV With 1,153 HP and Advanced Tech

Mercedes-AMG is preparing a high-riding electric SUV that serves as a counterpart to its GT sedan, bringing supercar-level performance to a more practical package. The upcoming model will feature a triple-motor setup, advanced chassis technology, and a suite of luxury and digital features. With a focus on both power and innovation, AMG’s new SUV is set to compete with some of the top names in the electric performance segment.

Design and Practicality

The new AMG electric SUV borrows heavily from the GT sedan’s design language, featuring a taller and more practical body. Key elements include a low-slung ‘Panamericana’ nose, a slim full-width light strip, large intakes, and sculpted hood. The profile is marked by a long wheelbase, flush door handles, large wheels, and pronounced rear haunches, while the rear features tri-circle taillights and an integrated roof spoiler.

Interior Features and Technology

Inside, the SUV will largely mirror the GT sedan, offering additional cargo space. The cabin is equipped with a 14-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.2-inch infotainment display running Mercedes-Benz MB.OS software. The MBUX-based system supports over-the-air updates, connected services, and AI integration. Other highlights include an augmented-reality head-up display, Burmester 4D surround sound, performance telemetry, and customizable drive modes. Interior finishes feature red contrast stitching, Alcantara sports seats, and carbon fiber trim.

Performance and Powertrain

The electric SUV is built on the AMG.EA architecture, which is designed exclusively for high-performance vehicles and utilizes an aluminium-intensive structure with high-strength materials. The GT 63 tri-motor configuration delivers 1,153 horsepower (860 kW) and 1,475 ft-lbs (2,000 Nm) of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph time of about 2.5 seconds. The GT 55 variant offers 805 horsepower (600 kW). Power comes from axial-flux motors developed by YASA, and is delivered to all four wheels.

The 106 kWh battery uses cylindrical cells and advanced cooling, while the F1-developed 800-volt architecture supports DC fast charging up to 600 kW. The SUV is expected to achieve a WLTP range of up to 435 miles (~700 km). Additional features include adaptive air suspension, rear-axle steering, active roll stabilization, advanced torque-vectoring, and chassis management. The vehicle will also offer synthesized gear shifting and a faux V8 soundtrack.

Competitor Comparison

The Mercedes-AMG electric SUV will compete with other high-performance electric SUVs such as the Porsche Cayenne Electric, Lotus Eletre, and Xiaomi YU7 GT. These models represent the upper echelon of the electric performance market, each offering a blend of power, technology, and luxury.

Why this matters

The introduction of a high-performance electric SUV from Mercedes-AMG signals the brand’s continued push into the electric vehicle space, leveraging advanced technology and performance engineering. With supercar-level power and a suite of luxury features, this model aims to attract buyers seeking both practicality and top-tier performance in an electric package.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in high-performance electric SUVs will soon have another option in the premium segment. Those considering rivals like the Porsche Cayenne Electric or Lotus Eletre may want to watch for the debut of the AMG SUV, especially if advanced tech and luxury features are a priority. With prototype testing underway and a debut expected early next year, prospective buyers should stay tuned for further details and official specifications.
