Mercedes-Benz saw a significant rise in electric vehicle sales in the second quarter of 2026, even as its overall global car sales declined. According to InsideEVs, the surge was largely powered by robust demand in Europe, where electric models now make up a substantial portion of the brand’s deliveries.
European Market Leads Mercedes-Benz EV Growth
In Q2 2026, Mercedes-Benz sold 63,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) across its car and van lineup, marking a 50% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth came despite an 8% year-over-year drop in total global passenger car sales, which fell to around 417,800 vehicles.
Europe was the main driver of this electric momentum. The brand delivered 43,500 electric passenger cars in Europe during the quarter, an 87% year-over-year increase. This means that Europe accounted for roughly 82% of Mercedes-Benz’s global electric passenger-car sales in Q2 2026. In the region, BEVs made up 26% of all Mercedes vehicles sold, with Germany seeing EVs account for 28.4% of sales in June 2026.

Mixed Results Globally, Challenges in China
While Europe posted strong results, Mercedes-Benz faced headwinds in other markets. Sales in China dropped by 30% in Q2 2026, contributing to the overall decline in global deliveries. Globally, the share of EVs in Mercedes-Benz’s total sales rose to 13% in Q2 2026, up from 7% a year earlier.
The company also reported that plug-in vehicles—including both BEVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)—reached 87,500 units worldwide in the quarter, making up about 21% of total sales. Of these, 52,900 were fully electric and 34,600 were PHEVs.
New Models and Portfolio Expansion
Mercedes-Benz’s refreshed electric lineup contributed to its European success. Deliveries of the new CLA electric model are already underway, and order books for the new electric C-Class and GLC are open, with first deliveries expected before the end of 2026.
Additionally, Mercedes-Benz introduced the VLE, a model available with fully electric power that combines elements of a van and a luxury sedan.
Competitor Comparison
Mercedes-Benz is not alone in targeting the premium electric vehicle segment. BMW and Audi, its main German rivals, have also implemented price cuts in China and are competing for the same customer base. The competitive landscape in China remains challenging for all three brands, with each seeking to strengthen their position amid shifting consumer preferences and increased local competition.
Why this matters
The sharp increase in Mercedes-Benz’s EV sales highlights the growing importance of electric vehicles in the European market, where regulatory pressures and consumer demand are accelerating the shift away from combustion engines. However, the brand’s struggles in China and other regions show that global EV adoption remains uneven.
For Mercedes-Benz, maintaining momentum in Europe is crucial, but long-term success will depend on its ability to compete in key international markets where rivals like BMW and Audi are also intensifying their efforts.
What this means for buyers
Buyers in Europe can expect a wider selection of new electric models from Mercedes-Benz, including the CLA, C-Class, and GLC, with deliveries starting this year. Those considering a premium EV should also compare offerings from BMW and Audi, especially as all three brands adjust pricing and expand their electric portfolios.
In other regions, particularly China, shoppers may see increased incentives or new model launches as Mercedes-Benz and its competitors work to regain market share.
