Mercedes-Benz Launches All-New Electric GLC SUV in China, Targeting Tesla and Local Rivals

Mercedes-Benz has officially launched its all-new electric GLC SUV in China, marking the debut of its MB.EA all-electric platform. The new model arrives as the German automaker seeks to regain momentum in the world’s largest EV market, where competition from both international and domestic brands is intensifying.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Electric GLC SUV for China

Mercedes-Benz Group AG introduced the all-new electric GLC SUV to the Chinese market on Wednesday. This model is the first to use the MB.EA (Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture) platform and is available in three versions: the five-seat Liujin edition, the five-seat Huiyin edition, and the six-seat Xingbo edition.

The Liujin edition is now on sale with a starting price of $49,693 (~AUD 71,534), while the Huiyin and Xingbo editions are available for pre-order at $44,091 (~AUD 63,471) and $57,161 (~AUD 82,286), respectively.

Technical Highlights and Features

The electric GLC SUV is built on an 800-volt high-voltage architecture and features an 85.5-kilowatt-hour ternary lithium battery supplied by CATL. It offers a CLTC range of up to 703 km (~437 miles) and can charge from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes.

Performance is delivered through a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined maximum output of 310 kW (416 hp), enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.9 seconds. The vehicle also features a retro shield-shaped illuminated grille with 942 backlit units and a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, the largest in-car display offered by Mercedes-Benz.

Localization for the Chinese Market

To better meet the preferences of Chinese consumers, Mercedes-Benz has made several localization adjustments. The new GLC SUV features a lengthened wheelbase of 3,027 mm (~119 inches), which is 55 mm longer than the standard-wheelbase model, and its overall length surpasses that of the current long-wheelbase gasoline-powered GLC.

The model offers a six-seat layout for the first time, with longer and thicker rear seat cushions tailored for local comfort. The intelligent assisted-driving system, supplied by Momenta, supports full-scenario navigation assistance for both urban and highway driving. The in-car virtual assistant is integrated with Doubao, ByteDance’s AI large language model, and supports dialects such as Cantonese.

Competitor Comparison

The all-new electric GLC SUV enters a highly competitive segment in China, facing off against the BMW iX3 and Audi Q6 e-tron, both of which are established German luxury electric SUVs. Additionally, the Tesla Model Y and Xiaomi YU7 are strong contenders, with advantages in market share, localized features, and user reputation.

Local brands like Li Auto’s Li i8 are also drawing significant attention, making the premium electric SUV segment one of the most contested in the Chinese market.

Historical Context

Mercedes-Benz has faced challenges in China, with 2024 sales totaling 714,000 vehicles, a 19% decline year-on-year. Top-end models such as the S-Class and Maybach saw a 14% drop in the same period.

The launch of the electric GLC SUV represents a strategic move to address these declines and compete more effectively in the rapidly evolving Chinese EV landscape.

Why this matters

The introduction of the all-new electric GLC SUV is a significant step for Mercedes-Benz as it seeks to regain ground in China’s fiercely competitive EV market. With local and international rivals gaining traction, the brand’s focus on localization and advanced technology is crucial for appealing to Chinese consumers.

The model’s debut also highlights the growing importance of China as a global hub for electric vehicle innovation and luxury segment competition.

What this means for buyers

Buyers in China now have access to a premium electric SUV from Mercedes-Benz that is specifically tailored to local preferences, offering advanced technology, fast charging, and a spacious, comfortable interior. Those considering alternatives like the BMW iX3, Audi Q6 e-tron, or Tesla Model Y should compare features, range, and pricing closely.

With the electric GLC SUV’s competitive pricing and localized features, it is positioned as a strong option for those seeking a luxury EV in China.
