BYD has introduced a new entry-level variant of its Atto 8 (Sealion 8) electric SUV, with official details emerging from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The latest model, also known as the Tang L domestically, features a significant reduction in power and a slightly narrower body compared to previous versions.
Key Specifications and Design Changes
The newly registered BYD Atto 8 (Sealion 8) measures 5,045 mm (~199 inches) in length, 1,980 mm (~78 inches) in width, and up to 1,760 mm (~69 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm (~116 inches). Track dimensions are symmetric at 1,700 mm (~67 inches). The approach angle is 18 degrees, and the departure angle is 21 degrees.
Compared to the 2025 single-motor model, the new variant’s body shell is 5 mm (~0.2 inches) longer and 16 mm (~0.6 inches) narrower. Visual customisation options include high-gloss black door panels, various roof shades, and multiple aerodynamic wheel rim designs.

Powertrain and Performance
This Atto 8 (Sealion 8) variant is equipped with a permanent-magnet synchronous motor delivering a peak output of 300 kW (402 hp) and a continuous-rated power of 150 kW. This marks a reduction from the previous 500 kW (671 hp) single-motor model, representing a 269 hp decrease.
The certified top speed is 250 km/h. Braking is managed by an integrated IPB hydraulic brake system from FinDreams Power, and the vehicle includes a standard automotive event data recorder. Energy is stored in lithium iron phosphate cells sourced from BYD’s internal manufacturing subsidiaries.
Weights, Seating, and Battery Logistics
Two curb weight classes are available, depending on seating and driver-assist features. The heavier configuration, ranging from 2,390 kg (~5,269 lbs) to 2,480 kg (~5,467 lbs), offers five- or seven-seat interior arrangements and uses battery cells from Wuwei with final pack integration in Zhengzhou.
The lighter five-seat trim has a curb weight of 2,195 kg (~4,840 lbs) and omits roof-mounted laser radar sensors. Its battery logistics are managed in Hefei, with final assembly in Shanwei.
Market Position and Sales Context
The introduction of this entry-level model follows earlier international launches of the vehicle family. BYD previously released a hybrid version in South America with retail pricing starting at $74,200 (~AUD 106,922).
According to China EV DataTracker, monthly deliveries of the upscale Tang L variant declined from 4,249 units in July 2025 and 3,338 units in December 2025 to 616 units in May 2026. June 2026 registrations showed a slight increase to 629 units, representing a 0.3% share of the brand’s domestic market.
Why this matters
The new BYD Atto 8 (Sealion 8) variant broadens the lineup with a lower-powered, potentially more accessible option for buyers. The introduction comes at a time when sales of the premium Tang L variant have slowed, indicating a need for refreshed configurations to meet evolving market demand.
By offering different powertrains and seating options, BYD is responding to shifting consumer preferences and regulatory requirements in China’s competitive electric SUV segment.
What this means for buyers
Buyers interested in a large electric SUV from BYD now have more choices, with the new Atto 8 (Sealion 8) variant offering a balance of performance and practicality. Those seeking a lower-powered, potentially more affordable option may find this new model appealing, especially as it maintains much of the space and technology of the higher-end versions.
Prospective owners should compare available trims, seating configurations, and battery logistics to select the version that best fits their needs.
