New BYD Qin Plus Revealed in China with LiDAR and Larger Dimensions

The new BYD Qin Plus has been revealed in China, featuring a refreshed exterior design and the addition of a LiDAR sensor. The model, now undergoing homologation, signals BYD’s intent to bring advanced driver assistance features to the mass market. The Qin Plus has been a strong seller for BYD, and the latest version introduces notable upgrades in size, technology, and capability.

BYD Qin Plus Exposed During Homologation

The new BYD Qin Plus was recently exposed by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) as part of the domestic homologation process. The vehicle has applied for a sales license and is preparing for commercial rollout in China. MIIT documents indicate that the new Qin Plus could be assembled at six different BYD factories, reflecting the model’s importance in BYD’s lineup.

Design and Dimensions

The latest Qin Plus adopts BYD’s Loong Face (Dragon Face) design language, featuring a closed front end, large air intake, sharp headlights, and a chrome-plated element between the lights. The car is equipped with real door handles and a single taillight unit.

In terms of size, the new Qin Plus measures 4,840 mm (~190.6 inches) in length, 1,900 mm (~74.8 inches) in width, and 1,498 mm (~59 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm (~110.2 inches). Compared to the previous model, it is 60 mm longer, 63 mm wider, and 17 mm higher, with the wheelbase stretched by 82 mm. The vehicle rides on 16- or 17-inch wheels, with front and rear overhangs of 978 mm (~38.5 inches) and 1,062 mm (~41.8 inches), respectively. Approach and departure angles are 13 and 14 degrees.

Powertrain and Performance

The new Qin Plus is powered by BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated BYD472QC engine producing 74 kW (99 hp) with a 120 kW (161 hp) electric motor. The car can reach a top speed of 180 km/h. Two LFP battery options are available: 16.2 kWh and 24.3 kWh, providing an electric range of 107–160 km (~66–99 miles). Fuel consumption with a depleted battery is rated at 3.6–3.7 liters per 100 km.

Advanced Driver Assistance and Technology

A key highlight of the new Qin Plus is the addition of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. This enables the DiPilot 300 (‘God’s Eye B’) assisted driving system, which supports Navigate on Autopilot functions for both urban roads and highways. While the system can handle address-to-address navigation, the driver is still required to monitor the situation and be ready to take control if necessary.

Market Position and Sales

The ongoing BYD Qin Plus DM-i is priced between $11,735 (~AUD 16,910) and $14,676 (~AUD 21,148) in China. According to China EV DataTracker, the Qin Plus achieved domestic deliveries of 480,025 units in 2024, making it one of BYD’s best-selling models. The new version, with its increased size and added technology, is expected to target a similar mass-market audience.

Why this matters

The introduction of LiDAR and advanced driver assistance features in the new BYD Qin Plus demonstrates BYD’s push to make high-tech safety and automation accessible in the mass market segment. With significant upgrades in size and technology, the Qin Plus is positioned to remain a strong competitor in China’s highly competitive plug-in hybrid market.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering the BYD Qin Plus can expect a larger, more technologically advanced sedan with improved driver assistance features. Those looking for a plug-in hybrid with extended electric range and modern safety systems may find the new Qin Plus an appealing option. Pricing details for the new model are yet to be confirmed, but it is likely to be positioned above the outgoing version.
