Nio Inc has announced that the per-vehicle cost of its ES8 SUV has risen sharply due to surging raw material prices. CEO William Li addressed the issue during a recent media briefing, highlighting the challenges facing China’s electric vehicle sector.
Rising Costs Put Pressure on Nio ES8 Pricing
William Li, founder, chairman, and CEO of Nio Inc, revealed that the cost to produce each ES8 SUV has increased by nearly 20,000 yuan (~$2,950) as a result of higher raw material prices. Li made these remarks during a media briefing, citing ongoing cost pressures from both memory chips and lithium carbonate.
Li explained that, in principle, the price of the ES8 would need to rise by 30,000 yuan to fully offset the increased costs. However, he emphasized that Nio is working closely with supply chain partners to hedge some of these expenses and is striving to keep prices stable for customers.

New Five-Seat ES8 Launch and Pricing Strategy
Nio recently introduced a five-seat version of the ES8, starting at $56,210 (~AUD 81,093) including the battery pack. This price is 5.9% lower than the previous three-row version, which launched at $59,734 (~AUD 86,177) in September 2025.
Despite the cost increases, Li stated that the ES8 still has some gross margin room, allowing Nio to absorb part of the additional expense. “In the short term, this is still within what we can bear,” Li said.

Nio’s Market Performance and Customer Base
Li highlighted that in May 2026, Nio surpassed BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi in sales across 48 cities and regions in China. The Nio main brand’s average transaction price in May was $56,122 (~AUD 80,966), exceeding those of the German luxury brands. In June, the average price rose further to $65,049 (~AUD 93,846).
Li noted that more than 68% of ES8 buyers came from additional purchases by users of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Porsche. He added, “Our users often joke that the next stop after BBA is Nio.”
Industry-Wide Cost Pressures
The cost challenges are not unique to Nio. Since the start of 2026, rising prices for memory chips and lithium carbonate have affected nearly all new vehicles in China. For example, the upcoming Li Auto L6 has seen its per-vehicle cost increase by more than 14,000 yuan, and may face a price hike at launch, according to local media.
The ES8 had previously led sales for six consecutive months in China’s large SUV and 400,000-yuan-class segments. It reached its 120,000th delivery on June 22, just 275 days after the first batch of deliveries began in late September 2025. However, deliveries dropped to 8,969 units in June, ending a seven-month streak of over 10,000 units per month.
Why this matters
The rising cost of raw materials is putting significant pressure on electric vehicle manufacturers like Nio, forcing them to balance profitability with competitive pricing. Nio’s efforts to maintain stable prices despite these challenges reflect broader industry trends and the importance of supply chain management.
With Nio now surpassing established luxury brands in both sales and average transaction price in key Chinese markets, the company’s ability to manage costs will be crucial for sustaining its momentum in the premium EV segment.
What this means for buyers
Buyers considering the Nio ES8 should be aware that while the company is working to keep prices stable, ongoing cost pressures may influence future pricing. The new five-seat ES8 offers a more affordable entry point compared to previous versions, but potential buyers should monitor for any further price adjustments as raw material costs continue to fluctuate.
