Nio Reaches 150,000 Vehicle Deliveries in Shanghai, Marking Major Milestone

Nio Inc has surpassed 150,000 cumulative vehicle deliveries in Shanghai, highlighting the company’s strong presence in its home city. The milestone, achieved in early July 2026, reflects both Nio’s rapid growth and Shanghai’s importance as a core market for the Chinese EV maker.

Nio’s Growth in Shanghai

According to an official statement from Nio Inc, the company reached 150,000 cumulative new vehicle deliveries in Shanghai as of early July 2026. This achievement was celebrated at the Nanxiang delivery center, where users of Nio’s three brands—Nio, Onvo, and Firefly—participated in a group delivery event.

Nio, founded in Shanghai in 2014, began local deliveries with its Founder’s Edition ES8 in 2018. Since then, the company has steadily expanded its presence in the city.

Market Performance and Model Highlights

By the end of June 2026, Nio Inc had delivered approximately 1.19 million vehicles across China, with Shanghai accounting for more than one-tenth of that total. From January to May 2026, Nio led Shanghai’s overall passenger vehicle market with retail sales of 16,582 units, regardless of energy type, body style, or price range.

Strong demand for flagship models has supported Nio’s performance. The ES9 SUV, launched on May 27 with a starting price of $73,216 (~AUD 105,397) including the battery pack, surpassed 10,000 deliveries nationwide within 30 days—a record for premium all-electric models in the 500,000-yuan class. For buyers choosing the BaaS (battery as a service) rental plan, the ES9’s starting price drops to $57,338 (~AUD 82,540).

On July 5, ES9 deliveries in Shanghai exceeded 1,000 units, making it the first city in China to reach this level. The ES8 has been the top seller in Shanghai’s large-SUV market and among models priced above $58,808 (~AUD 84,656) for seven consecutive months. From January to May 2026, Nio held over 60% market share in Shanghai’s large-SUV segment.

Brand and Model Achievements

Cumulative deliveries of the ES6 and EC6 series in Shanghai have surpassed 60,000 units, while the ET5 and ET5 Touring series are approaching 30,000 units. Firefly, Nio’s small premium brand, led Shanghai’s compact-car market from January to May 2026, regardless of price or energy type.

Nationwide, Nio delivered 40,597 vehicles in June 2026, marking a monthly high for the year and a 62.9% increase from the previous year. In the first half of 2026, the company delivered a total of 191,123 vehicles, up 67.4% year-on-year.

R&D and Future Plans in Shanghai

Shanghai is not only a key market but also an important research and development base for Nio. The company’s new battery R&D base project in Shanghai’s Jiading district is set to break ground in the second half of 2026. Once completed, the facility will house 31 lithium battery testing laboratories.

This project will further strengthen Nio’s dual-platform structure of “manufacturing in Anhui plus R&D in Shanghai,” supporting ongoing innovation and product development.

Why this matters

Nio’s achievement of 150,000 cumulative deliveries in Shanghai underscores the company’s strong foothold in one of China’s most competitive automotive markets. The rapid uptake of models like the ES9 and ES8 demonstrates robust demand for premium electric vehicles in Shanghai.

The continued investment in R&D facilities also signals Nio’s commitment to advancing battery technology and maintaining its leadership in the EV sector.

What this means for buyers

For consumers in Shanghai and across China, Nio’s expanding lineup and strong local support make it a leading choice in the premium EV segment. Buyers can expect ongoing product innovation and improved after-sales service as Nio invests further in R&D and delivery infrastructure.

Those considering a Nio vehicle may benefit from the company’s established presence and the growing popularity of its models, especially in major cities like Shanghai.
