Firefly, the premium compact EV brand under Nio Inc, has introduced its new Halo series, marking a shift toward design-driven development. The first model in the Halo lineup will be officially revealed on July 20, with display vehicles arriving at Firefly stores across China the same day.
Firefly Launches Halo Series
Firefly announced its new Halo series on Friday, positioning it as the brand’s first product line focused on design-led innovation. The company shared teaser images that highlight the model’s body finish, a softly illuminated logo, and wheel details that play with light and shadow.
The official debut event for the first Halo model will take place at 7:00 pm Beijing Time on July 20 at the Shanghai Botanical Garden. Firefly plans to reveal more about the design philosophy behind the vehicle’s colors, materials, and details during the event.
Design Philosophy and ‘Light of the Year’
The Halo series is described by Firefly as a design-driven initiative, aiming to capture and express contemporary urban life through a unique design language. As the starting point for the series, Firefly introduced its 2026 ‘Light of the Year,’ named ‘Inner Glow.’
The ‘Inner Glow’ concept is inspired by the soft and steady blue-green glow of the blue ghost firefly, which inhabits deep forests. Firefly said this glow will serve as the design foundation for the first Halo model, calling it the “Light of the Year.” Kris Tomasson, Nio’s senior vice president of design, discussed the design philosophy in a video released by the company.

Expansion and Sales Performance
The introduction of the Halo series marks Firefly’s expansion from a single-model lineup to a broader portfolio. Currently, Firefly offers only one model, which is the most affordable vehicle in Nio Inc’s range.
The current Firefly model starts at $17,674 (~AUD 25,255) for outright purchase in China, with a higher-spec version starting at $18,559 (~AUD 26,520). For customers choosing the BaaS (battery as a service) battery rental plan, the starting price drops to $11,773 (~AUD 16,822).
Firefly began its first deliveries on April 29, 2025. As of Thursday, cumulative deliveries have surpassed 70,000 units, achieved in about 15 months. In June, Firefly delivered 6,946 vehicles, a 76.7% increase year-on-year and the brand’s second-highest monthly total. For the first half of the year, Firefly delivered 29,172 vehicles, up 271.9% year-on-year, accounting for 15.26% of Nio Inc’s total deliveries during the period.

Why this matters
The launch of the Halo series signals Firefly’s intent to diversify its lineup and strengthen its presence in the premium compact EV segment. By focusing on design-driven development and introducing new concepts like ‘Inner Glow,’ Firefly is aiming to differentiate itself in a competitive market.
Strong sales growth and the expansion to a multi-model portfolio could help Firefly capture a larger share of Nio Inc’s overall deliveries and appeal to a broader range of consumers.

What this means for buyers
Buyers interested in Firefly vehicles will soon have more options to choose from, with the Halo series expanding the brand’s offerings beyond its current single model. The upcoming debut on July 20 provides an opportunity for consumers to experience the new design direction firsthand at Firefly stores across China.
Those considering a Firefly vehicle can expect continued innovation and potentially more competitive pricing and features as the brand grows its portfolio.
