Paper Transport Begins Tesla Semi Long Range Pilot in Chicago Market

Paper Transport (PTI), a Wisconsin-based carrier known for its sustainability initiatives, has started evaluating the Tesla Semi Long Range in dedicated operations around Chicago. This move marks another step in the adoption of battery-electric trucks by major freight operators in the US. The pilot comes as Tesla ramps up production of its electric Class 8 truck at its Nevada Gigafactory.

PTI’s Tesla Semi Pilot: Focused on Dedicated Routes

PTI is not placing a fleet order yet, but is instead testing the Tesla Semi Long Range within its dedicated operating model. This approach uses predictable routes and consistent mileage, which are ideal for assessing the performance of battery-electric trucks. PTI has already logged over 87 million miles on compressed and renewable natural gas as part of its 15-year sustainability push.

The company aims to evaluate how the Tesla Semi fits into its operations, particularly in scenarios where range and charging can be planned around a known duty cycle.

Tesla Semi Production and Specifications

Tesla began high-volume production of the Semi at its Gigafactory Nevada facility on April 29, 2026. The dedicated 1.7-million-square-foot production line is designed to build up to 50,000 trucks per year, marking a significant shift from limited hand-built units to scalable manufacturing.

The Tesla Semi is available in two trims: a Standard Range version rated at 325 miles (~523 km) and a Long Range version rated at 500 miles (~805 km). Both versions use an 800-kW tri-motor drivetrain with a total output of 1,072 hp. Charging is supported by Tesla’s 1.2-MW Megacharger system, which can restore 60% of range in about 30 minutes.

Adoption Trends and Real-World Testing

Since the Nevada production line opened, the Tesla Semi has seen growing interest from fleet operators. In California, the Semi accounted for 965 of 1,067 applications to the Clean Truck & Bus Voucher program between January 2025 and February 2026. By comparison, Daimler, PACCAR, and Volvo combined for fewer than 100 applications in the same period.

Real-world pilots have provided promising results. In June, ArcBest added Tesla Semis to its ABF Freight fleet after a 2025 pilot where the truck averaged 1.55 kWh per mile—about 9% better than earlier figures reported by DHL and Saia. Other operators, such as MDB and PepsiCo, have also integrated the Semi into container and regional freight operations.

Competitor Comparison

The Tesla Semi enters a competitive field that includes models from Daimler, PACCAR, and Volvo. According to 2024 CARB data, the average zero-emission Class 8 truck cost $435,000 (~AUD 626,827), while Tesla’s Long Range Semi was quoted at $290,000 (~AUD 417,885) and the Standard Range at $260,000 (~AUD 374,655) earlier this year. This positions Tesla as a price leader, undercutting the average by approximately $145,000 (~AUD 208,942).

Other electric semi truck options, such as the Volvo VNL Electric and Mercedes-Benz eActros, are also being adopted by fleets, but Tesla’s pricing and recent production ramp have made it a prominent choice for large-scale pilots and early deployments.

Historical Context

Tesla’s global vehicle sales reached 1,654,667 units in 2025, representing an 8.6% year-over-year decrease. Despite this, the company has maintained a positive long-term trend, with 1,789,226 units sold in 2024 and continued growth since 2013.

The launch of high-volume Semi production marks a new chapter for Tesla’s commercial vehicle ambitions, expanding its reach beyond passenger cars.

Why this matters

PTI’s pilot of the Tesla Semi Long Range highlights the growing momentum behind electric heavy-duty trucks in North America. With major fleets now testing and adopting battery-electric models, the sector is moving closer to mainstream commercial use.

Tesla’s ability to offer a lower purchase price and improved energy efficiency compared to competitors could accelerate the shift away from diesel, especially as more operators validate the total cost of ownership in real-world conditions.

What this means for buyers

Fleet operators considering electric trucks should monitor the results of PTI’s Chicago pilot and similar real-world deployments. The Tesla Semi’s competitive pricing and performance figures make it a strong candidate for dedicated routes, but regional charging infrastructure remains a key factor for broader adoption.

Buyers should also compare offerings from Daimler, Volvo, and PACCAR, especially as more data emerges from ongoing pilots and as charging networks expand.
