InsideEVs has published the results of a 70 mph highway range test for the Rivian R2 Performance Launch Edition, conducted in Colorado. With Rivian’s R2 seen as a pivotal model for the brand, this test offers a first look at how the electric SUV performs in demanding real-world conditions.
Highway Range Test in Colorado
InsideEVs contributor and State of Charge host Tom Moloughney tested a customer-spec Rivian R2 Performance Launch Edition on Colorado’s mountain highways. The test was performed at a steady 70 mph, with the vehicle fully charged at a Walmart DC fast charger before setting out.
The R2’s 87.9-kilowatt-hour battery is rated for up to 330 miles (~531 km) of range on the combined cycle with all-season tires. This figure drops to 307 miles (~494 km) with all-terrain tires, and to 276 miles (~444 km) when considering highway-only driving with those tires. The Colorado route included an elevation change of about 1,800 feet (~549 meters), making conditions more challenging than a flat highway.
Test Results and Efficiency
At the halfway point (50% state of charge), the R2 had covered 130 miles (~209 km) with an efficiency of 2.79 miles/kWh and 47 kWh consumed. By the end of the test, the R2 had traveled 259.4 miles (~417 km) with 4 miles (~6 km) remaining on the range estimate.
Total energy used was 88 kWh, resulting in an average efficiency of 2.97 miles/kWh. This outcome is about 6% below the EPA’s highway estimate for this configuration, but is considered strong given the elevation changes during the test.
Performance and Pricing
The 2027 Rivian R2 Performance is equipped with two electric motors—one on each axle—delivering 656 horsepower (489 kW) and 609 pound-feet (825 Nm) of torque. The SUV accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.
The current price for the Rivian R2 is $59,485 (~AUD 85,812). Rivian plans to release more affordable versions later this year and into early next year, with the entry-level R2 Standard Rear-Wheel Drive model starting at $46,495 (~AUD 67,073) and expected to arrive in late 2027. This base version will use a smaller battery and is projected to offer over 275 miles (~443 km) of range on a full charge.
Competitor Comparison
The Rivian R2 enters a competitive segment, facing off against the Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Each of these electric SUVs targets similar price points and range figures, making real-world efficiency and performance a key differentiator for buyers considering the R2.
Historical Context
Rivian’s global sales reached 51,579 vehicles in 2024, representing an 18% year-over-year decline. The R2’s launch is seen as a critical step for the company to regain momentum in a rapidly evolving EV market.
Regional Availability
The Rivian R2 is currently shipping to customers in the United States, with additional variants planned for release in the coming months. Details on international availability have not been specified in the current report.
Why this matters
The real-world range test provides valuable insight for prospective buyers, especially as range remains a top concern for EV shoppers. The R2’s ability to deliver strong efficiency under challenging conditions demonstrates its competitiveness in the mid-size electric SUV segment.
With Rivian’s recent sales decline, the R2’s performance and value proposition will be closely watched by both consumers and industry observers.
What this means for buyers
Buyers considering the Rivian R2 can expect real-world range figures that closely align with EPA estimates, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Those seeking a more affordable entry point should watch for the upcoming Standard Rear-Wheel Drive model, which will offer a lower price and solid range.
Comparing the R2 against established rivals like the Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be important for shoppers prioritizing range, performance, and pricing.
