A recent study conducted by researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany suggests that over 30 million homes across Europe have the potential to fulfill their energy requirements solely through rooftop solar panels. The findings indicate that more than 50% of the 41 million freestanding homes in Europe could have achieved energy self-sufficiency in 2020 by relying on solar panels and batteries. The study further anticipates that this proportion could escalate to 75% by the year 2050. Moreover, advancements in solar technology are expected to make it economically feasible for a subset of these standalone residences to disconnect entirely from the electrical grid in the coming decades.
