SEG Automotive Offers 30% Cheaper Remanufactured Drive Units for Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro EVs

Owners of first-generation Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro EVs now have a more affordable option for replacing failing drive units. SEG Automotive, a German company known for its work with electric vehicle components, is expanding its remanufactured drive unit offerings to include these popular EV models.

Drive Unit Failures in Affordable EVs

The first-generation Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro EVs have gained a reputation for drive unit failures, particularly due to issues with the reduction gearbox bearings. This problem, often referred to as the ‘wheel of fortune’ ticking by owners, can lead to costly repairs.

Dealer replacement of the transmission for these models typically ranges from $2,500 (~AUD 3,525) to $5,000 (~AUD 7,050), representing a significant portion of the vehicle’s value.

SEG Automotive’s Remanufactured Solution

SEG Automotive, a German company recognized for manufacturing starters and alternators, is now remanufacturing drive units for electric vehicles. The company initially focused on the Large Drive Unit (LDU) for the first-generation Tesla Model S and later included the Renault Zoe in its portfolio.

From the end of this year, SEG will offer remanufactured drive units for the Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona EV under its Redrive brand. These units will be available for both the 134-horsepower and 201-horsepower versions of the vehicles.

SEG Automotive refurbishes the electric motor, transmission, and inverter, installs new bearings and seals, and addresses known vulnerabilities in its remanufactured drive units.

How Owners Can Access the Service

To obtain a remanufactured SEG drive unit, owners are advised to contact an authorized repair shop. The faulty unit can then be sent to SEG for refurbishment and return.

The newly introduced remanufactured drive units for the Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona will be officially unveiled at the Automechanika show in Frankfurt, scheduled from 8 to 12 September.

Why this matters

The introduction of remanufactured drive units by SEG Automotive provides a lower-cost alternative for owners facing expensive repairs on aging Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro EVs. With potential savings of up to 30% compared to dealer replacements, this development could help extend the usable life of these affordable electric vehicles.

What this means for buyers

Current and prospective owners of first-generation Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro EVs should be aware of this new, more affordable repair option. If facing drive unit issues, contacting an authorized repair shop about SEG Automotive’s remanufactured units could result in significant savings.
