Stelato G9: Huawei and BAIC Launch Luxury Off-Road SUV with BEV and EREV Options

Huawei and BAIC have introduced the Stelato G9, their first hardcore SUV under the HIMA alliance. The G9 is available in both battery electric (BEV) and extended-range electric (EREV) versions, with a starting price below earlier pre-sale figures. The model is set to make its public debut at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show.

Stelato G9 Launch and Pricing

The Stelato G9 officially went on sale at a HIMA product launch event, with prices ranging from $63,711 (~AUD 89,656) to $81,499 (~AUD 114,688). This starting price is lower than the pre-sale price of $65,193 (~AUD 91,742). The G9 is offered in 10 different variants, covering both BEV and EREV powertrains, and comes in five- and six-seat layouts.

Design and Features

Breaking from previous Stelato models, the G9 adopts a boxy exterior design. The SUV measures 5,377 mm (~212 inches) in length, 2,050 mm (~81 inches) in width, and 1,897 mm (~75 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,160 mm (~124 inches). Standard features include dual zero-gravity front seats and an onboard compressor refrigerator.

Powertrain and Performance

The Stelato G9 is built on Huawei’s 800-volt Giant Whale battery platform and comes standard with dual-motor all-wheel drive, delivering a combined maximum output of 437 kW (586 hp). The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 5 seconds.

The BEV version is equipped with a 120-kWh battery pack, offering a CLTC range of up to 728 km (~452 miles). The EREV version is available with either a 56-kWh or 75-kWh battery, providing up to 405 km (~252 miles) of battery-only CLTC range and up to 1,366 km (~849 miles) of combined range.

Advanced Technology and Safety

The G9 features Huawei ADS 5.0 and a new-generation dual-path LiDAR system, supported by 38 high-precision sensors throughout the vehicle. According to Huawei, it is the first luxury hardcore SUV with an architecture designed for Level 3 autonomous driving, and the first of its kind to receive approval in Beijing for Level 3 autonomous-driving road tests at speeds up to 120 km/h.

The SUV debuts Huawei’s all-terrain Tuling platform, which includes dual-chamber air suspension, dual-valve continuously variable damping shock absorbers, and 130 mm of ride-height adjustment.

Competitor Comparison

The Stelato G9’s direct competitors include the Bao 8 from BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand and GWM’s Tank 700. These rival models typically use body-on-frame construction and are designed with a strong focus on off-road capability, often prioritizing ruggedness over urban comfort.

Why this matters

The launch of the Stelato G9 marks a significant step for Huawei and BAIC in the luxury off-road SUV segment, combining advanced electric powertrains with high-end features and autonomous driving technology. Its approval for Level 3 autonomous-driving road tests in Beijing highlights the rapid progress of intelligent vehicle development in China.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in a luxury off-road SUV with advanced technology and a choice between BEV and EREV powertrains now have a new option in the Stelato G9. With its competitive pricing and feature set, the G9 is positioned to attract those seeking both performance and innovation in the segment. Shoppers should compare the G9 with established rivals like the Bao 8 and Tank 700 to determine which model best fits their needs.
