Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s design chief since 2008, is the owner of the very first Model S Plaid Signature Edition. Before settling in with this exclusive EV, von Holzhausen took the car to Unplugged Performance for a suite of protective treatments.
A Special Edition for Tesla’s Design Boss
The Tesla Model S Plaid Signature Edition represents a unique chapter for the brand’s flagship sedan. Von Holzhausen, whose design work has defined Tesla’s visual identity, took delivery of Signature #001—the first of just 250 units produced.
This limited-run model features a distinctive Garnet Red finish, gold emblems, special badging, and 21-inch Velarium wheels with gold calipers over carbon-ceramic brakes. Inside, the car is fitted with white Alcantara upholstery, a yoke steering wheel, and Signature branding.
Protective Detailing by Unplugged Performance
Unplugged Performance, a California-based tuner known for wheels, brakes, wraps, body kits, and detailing, handled the preservation of von Holzhausen’s Model S Plaid Signature #001. The process began with a chemical decontamination wash to remove any bonded fallout and transport residue.
Technicians then disassembled parts of the exterior to apply paint protection film seamlessly, shielding the factory paint from chips and scratches. Every panel and trim piece received a full ceramic coating, which adds hydrophobic properties and enhances gloss. Finally, all glass surfaces were treated with a window film that blocks 99% of ultraviolet radiation and 98% of infrared heat, helping to protect the interior from sun damage.
Signature Edition Details and Production
The Model S Plaid Signature Edition arrived earlier this year as a farewell special for the long-running nameplate. Production is strictly limited to 250 units, each offered by invitation to select customers at $159,420 (~AUD 224,340).
Like the standard Plaid, the Signature Edition uses a tri-motor setup producing 1,020 hp (761 kW / 1,034 PS), but adds exclusive design touches both inside and out.
Von Holzhausen’s History With Unplugged Performance
This is not the first time von Holzhausen has worked with Unplugged Performance. In the past, he had his personal Model 3 upgraded with coilover suspension, sway bars, adjustable suspension arms, and carbon-ceramic brakes, while keeping the exterior design unchanged.
Why this matters
The preservation of Model S Plaid Signature #001 highlights the importance of maintaining the condition of limited-edition vehicles, especially those with unique design and historical significance. For collectors and enthusiasts, such protective treatments can help ensure that rare models retain their value and appearance over time.
What this means for buyers
For those considering a limited-edition or high-value EV, investing in professional detailing and protective treatments can be a worthwhile step to safeguard both aesthetics and long-term value. The Model S Plaid Signature Edition’s exclusive features and limited production make it a collector’s item, and similar care may be advisable for other rare vehicles.
