Tesla Giga Shanghai Produces 6 Millionth Battery Pack, Marking Major Milestone

Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai has reached a new production milestone, rolling out its 6 millionth battery pack. This achievement highlights the factory’s role as Tesla’s largest and most productive manufacturing site worldwide. The milestone comes as the company faces shifting sales dynamics in China and ramps up exports to global markets.

Giga Shanghai Hits 6 Million Battery Packs

Tesla announced on Chinese social media platform Weibo that its Shanghai Gigafactory has produced its 6 millionth battery pack. The company emphasized its commitment to in-house research and development, stating, ‘From cell chemistry to battery pack structure, we insist on in-house R&D and independent design.’ Tesla also noted that its battery packs undergo multiple rounds of stringent testing to ensure strong performance, long lifespans, and high safety standards.

It took Giga Shanghai about 9 months to move from 5 million to 6 million battery packs, with the previous milestone reached in November 2025. The factory sources its battery cells from CATL and LG Energy Solution, assembling them into packs on-site.

Factory Background and Production Capacity

Located in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area, Giga Shanghai is Tesla’s first vehicle plant outside the United States and is recognized as China’s first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project. Construction began in January 2019, with production starting by the end of that year. Deliveries of the Model 3 sedan began in January 2020, followed by the Model Y SUV in January 2021.

The plant currently has an annual production capacity of about 1 million vehicles, making it Tesla’s largest and most highly utilized manufacturing base globally. Over more than six years of operation, Giga Shanghai has contributed nearly half of Tesla’s global electric vehicle deliveries.

Recent Production and Export Trends

While Giga Shanghai’s manufacturing output remains robust, Tesla’s sales performance in China has softened. In July, Tesla delivered 27,249 vehicles in China, a 32.91% decrease year-on-year and the second consecutive month of declines. However, exports from the factory have surged, with 66,330 vehicles shipped abroad in July—a record monthly high that accounted for 70.88% of the plant’s wholesale sales.

In the first seven months of this year, Giga Shanghai exported 295,324 vehicles, up 130.12% year-on-year and already surpassing the total exports for all of 2025. Meanwhile, domestic deliveries in China during the same period fell 12.44% year-on-year to 266,204 vehicles.

Competitor Comparison

Tesla’s Giga Shanghai competes with major EV manufacturers in China, including BYD, NIO, and XPeng. BYD, for example, reported global EV sales of 314,100 units in April 2026, maintaining a strong presence in both domestic and export markets. While Tesla leads in export volume, BYD and other local brands continue to expand their market share within China, often introducing new models and technologies to attract buyers.

Why this matters

The production of 6 million battery packs at Giga Shanghai underscores Tesla’s manufacturing scale and its ability to meet global demand, even as domestic sales fluctuate. The factory’s rapid ramp-up in exports demonstrates its strategic importance not only for the Chinese market but also for Tesla’s global operations.

This milestone also highlights the evolving landscape of EV manufacturing in China, where foreign and domestic brands are both scaling up production and competing for market share.

What this means for buyers

For consumers, Tesla’s ongoing investment in Giga Shanghai means continued availability of locally produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, as well as potential new variants like the recently announced Model Y with a 659 km (~409 miles) range. Buyers in China may see more options as Tesla expands its lineup to boost local demand, while international customers benefit from increased export volumes.

Those considering a Tesla should watch for updates on new model releases and potential pricing adjustments as the company responds to changing market conditions.
