Tesla Model Y Leads June 2026 China Deliveries as Model 3 Demand Softens

Tesla’s June 2026 delivery figures for China reveal a strong performance from the Model Y, while the Model 3 continues to face declining demand. The latest data also highlights a surge in exports from Tesla’s Shanghai plant, reflecting shifting dynamics in the world’s largest EV market.

Tesla’s June 2026 China Delivery Breakdown

In June 2026, Tesla delivered 52,920 vehicles in China, representing an 11.93% increase from May but a 13.93% decrease compared to the same month last year. The Model Y remained Tesla’s top performer, accounting for 38,654 deliveries, or 73.04% of the company’s total for the month. This marked a 33.70% rise from May, though still down 13.81% year-on-year.

The Model 3, by contrast, saw 14,266 deliveries in June, making up 26.96% of Tesla’s China volume. This figure was down 22.34% from May and 14.25% lower than June 2025. Over the first half of 2026, Model Y deliveries in China reached 172,513 units, a slight 0.60% increase year-on-year, while Model 3 deliveries fell sharply to 66,442 units, down 27.72% from the previous year.

Exports from Shanghai Plant Surge

Tesla’s Shanghai facility exported 36,171 vehicles in June, a 257.60% jump year-on-year, though slightly down 6.54% from May. Of these exports, 18,371 were Model 3s—up 395.18% year-on-year—and 17,800 were Model Ys, up 177.91%. Exports made up 40.60% of Tesla China’s wholesale sales for the month.

For the first half of 2026, Shanghai plant exports totaled 228,994 vehicles, representing a 126.58% increase compared to the same period last year.

Wholesale Sales and Quarterly Trends

Tesla China’s overall wholesale sales reached 89,091 units in June, up 24.43% year-on-year. This marked the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year growth and set a new monthly record for 2026. In the second quarter, wholesale sales totaled 254,551 units, a 32.77% increase from Q2 2025.

Notably, the Shanghai plant exported 128,394 vehicles in Q2, surpassing its 126,157 domestic deliveries for the first time in a single quarter. However, Tesla’s deliveries in China for Q2 fell 2.05% year-on-year, marking the fifth straight quarterly decline. China accounted for just 26.28% of Tesla’s global deliveries in Q2, the lowest share since late 2020.

Competitor Comparison

Tesla faces intensifying competition in China. In June, Leapmotor recorded wholesale sales of 93,376 units, overtaking Tesla China for the month. BYD maintained its lead with 397,292 passenger NEV wholesale sales. Nio Inc and Xpeng also achieved new monthly delivery records for the year to date, underscoring the increasingly competitive landscape for electric vehicles in China.

Why this matters

Tesla’s June 2026 results highlight the company’s reliance on the Model Y in China, as well as the growing importance of exports from its Shanghai plant. The persistent decline in Model 3 deliveries and the shrinking share of China in Tesla’s global sales reflect both shifting consumer preferences and the impact of fierce domestic competition.

With rivals like BYD and Leapmotor gaining ground, Tesla’s performance in China will remain a key indicator of its global strategy and ability to adapt in the world’s largest EV market.

What this means for buyers

For consumers in China, the dominance of the Model Y suggests continued strong support and availability for this model, while the Model 3 may see further incentives or updates as Tesla responds to market pressures. Buyers should also watch for new offerings from domestic brands like BYD, Leapmotor, Nio, and Xpeng, which are rapidly expanding their lineups and sales volumes.
