Toyota to Launch Advanced Driver Assistance System in 2028 with Key Differences from Tesla FSD

Toyota is preparing to introduce a next-generation advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in 2028, aiming to compete with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving but with a distinct technical approach. The system, described as ‘Level 2++,’ will incorporate additional safety guardrails and is expected to expand to more Toyota models by 2030.

Toyota’s New ADAS: What to Expect

Toyota’s upcoming ADAS will build on its current offerings, which include adaptive cruise control with lane centering, lane change assist, and auto park. The new system, set to debut in 2028, is described as ‘Level 2++’—a term used by automakers to indicate capabilities that go beyond standard Level 2 but do not reach full Level 3 autonomy.

According to Japan’s Nikkei, this system will allow supervised point-to-point driving on highways and in cities, similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving. However, drivers will still need to remain attentive and ready to intervene at any time.

Toyota’s Guardrail Approach to Safety

Unlike Tesla’s reliance on end-to-end AI, Toyota plans to implement a ‘guardrail’ system that monitors the AI’s behavior and blocks unexpected actions based on parameters set by humans. This layered approach is designed to enhance safety and maintain explainability in the system’s decisions.

Akihiro Sarada, head of Toyota’s Software Development Center, explained, “We’ll develop Level 4 technology from a technical standpoint, but offer it commercially as Level 2++. We’ll proceed in a way that ensures both safety and explainability based on the technology.” While the underlying technology may be capable of higher autonomy, drivers will remain responsible for vehicle operation.

Deployment Timeline and Industry Context

Toyota plans to introduce the new system on its 2028 models and expand it to more vehicles by 2030. It is not yet clear which markets will receive the technology first.

Japan has already legalized Level 4 autonomous systems and aims to have around 10,000 Level 4 taxis, buses, and other vehicles on its roads by 2030. Toyota is also reportedly in discussions with Waymo to enter the robotaxi sector, though details and a timeline have not been disclosed.
