According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) report released today, a total of 62.8 gigawatts (GW) of new utility-scale electric generating capacity is projected to become operational in 2024. Let’s start with solar. The EIA anticipates a record-breaking increase in utility-scale solar capacity in 2024, with an expected addition of 36.4 GW. This would nearly double the 18.4 GW increase seen in 2023, which already set a record for annual US utility-scale solar installations. With the easing of supply chain challenges and trade restrictions, solar energy is expected to continue outpacing capacity additions from other sources.
