U.S. Public EV Charging Network Surpasses 250,000 Ports

The United States has reached a significant milestone in electric vehicle infrastructure, now boasting over 250,000 public charging ports. This figure includes both fast-charging and Level 2 options, reflecting rapid growth in the sector. According to the Department of Energy, the expansion is helping to address concerns about charging accessibility for EV owners.

Breakdown of Charging Infrastructure

The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center reports a total of 250,406 individual charging hookups across 80,543 station locations nationwide. Of these, more than 180,000 are Level 2 plugs, while over 73,000 are DC fast chargers. Some Level 1 options are also included in the count.

Tesla remains a major player, accounting for approximately 50,000 of the public charging points in the U.S. The company leads in fast-charger deployments, with around 38,000 DC charging ports available through its Supercharger network.

Recent Growth and Expansion

The growth in charging infrastructure has accelerated in recent years. The combined number of Level 2 and fast-charging ports surpassed 100,000 in April 2021 and exceeded 200,000 by March 2024. In 2024 alone, more than 5,000 fast-charging points and nearly 13,000 Level 2 chargers have been installed.

Other networks are also expanding quickly. Ionna now operates 120 locations with a total of 1,130 DC charging points, while Rivian’s Adventure Network includes 149 stations and just over 1,000 DC chargers. ChargePoint leads in Level 2 infrastructure, offering over 76,000 plugs across the country.

Competitor Comparison

Tesla Supercharger is the largest proprietary fast-charging network in the U.S., recently opening access to other brands. Electrify America is a major nationwide competitor, focusing on ultra-fast charging with non-proprietary access. EVgo also maintains a significant presence, particularly in urban and highway locations, providing a range of DC fast charging options.

Regional Availability and Market Trends

The expansion of charging infrastructure is occurring across all regions of the United States, supporting both urban and rural EV adoption. Despite a 0.6% year-over-year decline in new auto sales in May 2026, the charging sector continues to grow. Tesla’s share of the U.S. EV market was 46% in 2025, down from 49% in 2024, indicating a diversifying market.

Why this matters

The rapid increase in public charging ports addresses one of the main barriers to EV adoption: concerns about charging accessibility. With over 250,000 charging points now available, drivers have more options for refueling, whether on highways or in city centers.

This infrastructure growth is crucial for supporting the expanding EV market and ensuring that charging availability keeps pace with vehicle adoption.

What this means for buyers

For prospective EV buyers, the growing network of public charging stations means greater convenience and flexibility. Shoppers can expect improved access to both fast-charging and Level 2 options, making it easier to consider an EV for daily use or long-distance travel.

Buyers should compare charging network coverage in their area and consider compatibility with major networks like Tesla Supercharger, Electrify America, and ChargePoint when choosing an EV.
