In 2024, solar capacity expansions surged ahead, surpassing coal as renewable energy’s installed generating capacity, as per the latest data from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). According to FERC’s “Energy Infrastructure Update,” with figures up to January 31, 2024 (reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign), solar accounted for 2,527 megawatts (MW) of new installed generating capacity in the initial month of the year, constituting 87.3% of the total. This marks the second-highest monthly figure ever recorded for solar, trailing only December 2023, which saw the addition of 4,979 MW.
